Over the past couple of weeks I have bought a new Khyam Ridgi-pod Excelsior, two bedroom pods, groundsheets and a sun canopy.

Erecting the base unit yesterday to inspect, I found two holes in the roof where  the joints had chafed the fabric. Coser inspection of the shipping box revealed several moon shaped holes/dents in one end so clearly this tent has had a bad time getting to the store.

One bedroom pod had a sealant splodge on the flysheet and the end of the zip came off the second pod.

Returning these to the store, I was give a new boxed tent (replacement bedroom pods had to be ordered) and so I set off home to check this out.

Opening the box I found that paint had come off several poles and it looked like a tent had been cliped to them. There were scuff marks on the lower sections of the main poles and I found two holes in the bottom part of the attached doorway canopy.

so this one has also been returned to the store.

And the sun canopy ?? well I inspected that this morning and found that it wasnt 'finished'. The two brass eyelets to take the support poles had not been fitted. In fact although the strenghening webbing is in place, there are no holes or brass eyelets.

100% failure so far in several £100s of tent. This experience does give me a little concern about the quality of Khyam tents.....

Good news is that my tent dealers have been fant6astic so far. I suggested and have agreed with that the replacement tents will me opened by both of us and erected to check before I leave the store.

And a fully finished Sun canopy is on its way to me.

Sad, and all true.

Not a great experience of Khyam, it`s true, but you have to be happy with the follow up service from your dealer, no? Want to post up his name so we can all applaud? Camping shop service has been taking a bit of a deserved knocking recently. Its nice to hear of a shop that gives good customer service for once, though it`s a shame it was needful.

That's such a shame. We put up our Khyam Tourer 400 on Saturday prior to our trip tomorrow and it looks fantastic. We'll be sure to give it a thorough inspection though, thanks for the warning. Not a very good advert for Khyam is it?

HI there,

You can see my thread on our new Kyham XXL about the broken poles - I was also told by our camping store Mitchells (who were very helpful) that they have had several with the same problems.

The chap at the store said he had been in touch with Khyam and while they always pay out - did not seem bothered and said 'this does happen' !!!

We owned an ultradome for 8 years and loved every minute of it - it stood up in Malham in the dales to 50 MPH winds and we had to tie to the car but the poles never broke - it seems to me that the quality of these tents for the amount of money that you pay for them is dire.

We have bought an Outwell Sunnvalley 6, better poles than the Montana 6 and we are very happy with it - plus we got £100 refund !!

Good luck with yours.

Kind regards

Blimey.. so sorry to read your bad experience. We've had a RigidomeXXL for three years now and only ever broke one rapidex joint (my fault). We've been to see the Rigi-Pods and couldn't see any difference in construction between the new stuff and our '02 model. Persevere with it though, 'cos they're great tents, easy to put up and very very stable.

I unreservedly recommend;

The Gorge Outdoors (01934 742688)

And

Go Outdoors (02476671280)

Both offer excellent customer service.

The story is not yet over… I will post later

I have just posted a review of our Khyam Ridi-pod Classic. We had no faults I am pleased to say and it performed well in some bad patches of weather. I hope our experience is more typical than yours. As it happens, we purchased from a store just located along the same road and the Khyam head office.

Hi all, I am amazed to see that someone is having the same problem as us. We brought a kyham ultimate classic just after easter, and took it away the first may bank holiday. On putting it up we noticed a series of small holes in the front porch. On return from our trip we took it back to the supplier who were brilliant and changed it without question. We then took the new tent away the last bank holiday and we again had a hole, this time on the side. We have rang the supplier who again have been great, but it is finding time to yet again visit them and change the tent. We loved the tent and it has stood up to some pretty bad weather, but this time before we leave the shop we will be inspecting it. Kim

Yep.
Sporting Supplies - I would have named them but could not remember their name.

Hi All,

Well, it reached the first week in August and we had been without a tent since 1st week of May so I got all my money back.

I am very sad about this because I think the design of the ridgiPod is first class, but for me there were issues.

I will not air them in public but good luck and enjoy your ridgipod tents out there.

So that left us without a tent and weekends rapidly approaching. You might note that we had also missed the main tent selling season so what to choose and what would be available ?

In the end, with advice from Go Camping and all the positives on this forum, we chose an Outwell Montana 12 with canopy (sight unseen !!) and it arrives on Monday 15th from World of Camping (who also seem to be a great store).

From what I can see this will be ideal for my family of 5 campers. Spacious and well made with super design features (Maybe Khyam should take a look over thier shoulder at this tent).

It also meets one of my criteria which is a draught free environment, but without having to pitch inner first. I dont like sewn in ground sheets but will overlook that on this occasion and take great casre using of course a ground sheet protector (7m x 4m !!) inside and outside the tent.

There is also flexibilty in use of the inners which is also ideal.

So we are back in business, almost half the cost of the Khyam, half the size of the khyam and fantastic quality, so it feels good. I will report back after the first outing in Oxford over w/e of 19th.

I am disappointed about the ridgipod and would have been very happy paying the price for a khyam .... you never know, maybe next year if things change ??

I would start a new thread on this if I were you.  Otherwise it might be missed.  Sorry, can't help you with your query but I'm sure someone else will know.
