Hi, my son borrowed our tent which hasn’t been used for some time. Unfortunately it leaked really badly and they ended up having to go home. He wanted to just bin it there and then but we told him to take it home, dry it out and give it back.
So now having to decide what to do with it - is it possible to sell a tent needs reroofing or donate? Or would we need to reproof it first?
Thank you
Where was it leaking, through the fabric or the seams?
Is it synthetic or cotton fabric?
A leaking tent has no resale value so you will be better solving the problem if practicable.
Article in latest CCC mag (p. 42) about successfully resealing a leaking polyester tent with Fabsil Universal Protector plus Gear Aid Seam Grip for the seams.
Cotton treatment is different, hence the query about what your tent is made of.
Plenty of threads on this topic, if you search. But it’s doable, if the tent is one you like.
A synthetic tent may suffer from condensation especially if it is cold. If the inner tent is touching or blowing against the flysheet the condensation will transfer and enter the inner tent.
A tent that is pitched on ground that becomes sodden will eventually leak through the groundsheet, you need to seek higher ground.
A tent is more likely to be poorly erected when loaned out in this case to your son. Put the tent up on test and give it another chance.
