Morning, I've always wanted to try camping as the idea of being out side and having a slower pace of life appeals to me. Hubby and I hired equipment to see if we could cope.. it's been difficult! The tent just about fits 2 air beds in and that's it. I am in agony and can't sleep, hence this post at half 6 in the morning.

Cooking wise, enjoyed breakfast on the BBQ yesterday, not sure how much we will enjoy it today in the rain as there is no cover.

I'm still wanting to give it a proper go, so please may I pick your brains for equipment?

Tent wise, definitely need one I can stand up in, and have storage space.

Re sleeping, are self inflating mattresses any good?

How do people cook when camping in the rain??

This has been an eye opener for sure. I really wanted to love camping but I am a bit put off by this experience.

Many thanks!

Have attached a photo of what we are currently in.

lol the wrong tent then! yeah you sure did, you need to go shopping for a proper tent, but if there are any other tents on your camp site go and take a look at them, ask the owners what they like/dislike about their tent.

you need to get a tent with the highest hydrostatic number possible, under 3000mm is a waste of time for the uk. self inflating mats are fine, as long as you are up off the floor so you need a campbed too. and decent sleeping bags 4 season ones.

cooking get done on a stove, bbqs are not really up to being your only source of cooking, 2 burners, and something to put the stove on up off the ground. and then you need a windbreaker or a porch awning with the doors wide open for ventilation.

that set up you have hired i would only be thinking about letting the kids in in the back garden, i wouldnt be intending to use it for proper camping

What's wrong with your airbed?
Is it a cheap pvc thing or better made one 6" deep with a flock surface?
You say you're using 2 single airbeds, it may be too narrow for you.
Actually I have a good quality double air bed, used once that I want to dispose of, but you'll need a pump.
Self inflatiing mats are amazing but tend to be narrow and may not be your thing, go to a camping shop in shorts with keys in your pocket and consider the SIM you can't feel your keys on. You can actually get double SIMS.
Also look at the camp beds, a camp bed may be your thing.

The higher your tent the more ground space you'll have but the more damage your tent will take in windy conditions. A cheap tent marked Showerproof at you local supermarket will leak and tend to blow down easily, unknow Chinese brands of tent are best avoided so look at quality British brands, I tend to buy Vango, they have experience of making mountaineering tents so their family summer camping tents are usually ok.
A massive tunnel tent, the size of a garage, pitched sideways to the wind will take a lot of damage in a storm, the glass fibre poles will gradually shred and split.
I've never used an airbeam tent, they're not my thing, consider one before declining on the concept.

Compliment your BBQ with a small camping gas stove, don't get one of those small suitcase stoves they're awful. If you intend to go to France get a Campingaz stove with disposable gas cans, but you have to buy the gas in France as gas isn't allowed in cars on ferries.

Yup, I nearly cried when I saw the size of it! Well if we survived a night and a half in that, I think we should be grand in a bigger tent!

I did look at all the other with envy, didn't get a chance to speak to anyone else as it was raining and I was fed up. Thank you, daft question but what would you put the stove on?

The air bed itself wasn't too bad, I think it was maybe more being so close to the ground, having no room to move and not being able to stand, did a number on my already weak back. So I think a camp bed may be more suitable!

I'll have a look at vango and a stove, thanks for your help.

if i was you i would be looking to buy from the likes of marketplace as esp at this time of year people are selling their stuff.

a double burner, on an aluminium table with some kind of shelter from the wind would be fine.

I started camping in 2007 to attend car rallies and got the camping bug.

The first tent was a basic 3-people tent which was just about to fit a double airbed inside for 2 people.

Hardly any room for storage let alone standing up!

Since then, my gear list had evolved over the years, and was very happy with my last set up before I changed unit to a van due to declining health and physical strength.

The tent was a cotton canvas Dutch Pyramid, an ESVO Bedouin 340, which was a 4-berth tent with an inner tent, with a standing height living area, a canopy outside where I could set up my camp kitchen, expendable with a vario awning and side panels, for just me and the dog.

The inner tent could accommodate a single camp bed with a SIM on top (very comfortable) width wise, plus an elevated dog bed on the side.

For cooking, I used a Coleman Dual Fuel 2-burner stove (I loved that stove) which worked well in winter, as I found out butane did not burn well at sub-zero temperature the hard way when I camped over the New Year weekend in late December 2009.

After the first trip in 2007, I decided to camp with EHU so that I could run a thermo-electric cool box to keep perishable food like milk, cream and meats etc...

With EHU, I carried and used a 2kW kettle and a 2kW fan heater, and had only made the mistake of using both at the same time and tripped the EHU just the once!

I personally would advoid cooking inside a tent's extension/living area with a naked flame. However, I would consider using an induction hob inside a tent, and would probably get the 2-burner induction hob by Vango which is rated at 1.6kW combined (800W per burner).

Summary of the gears I would recommend:
- A 4-berth tent with a standing height living area, extendable with an extension if possible for cooking etc.
- Coleman 424 2-burner Dual Fuel Stove if naked flame is preferred/practical
- Vango double induction hob
- A roller EHU kit with USB sockets
- A 10m+ EHU extension as a roller unit only comes with 15m cable and some sites advise at least 25m would be necessary
- Outwell Posadas or Kampa Dream camp bed
- A 5cm SIM if using on top of a camp bed, or thicker if using on its own
- A 2kW maximum fan heater
- A 2kW maximum kettle
- Tefal's space-saving Ingenio pans that are induction-ready (their cheapest line is not induction-ready, if an induction hob is to be used)

The above is based on my personal experience and preferences, and it may not suit everyone's needs and wants out of camping.

However, I hope it helps in some ways, good luck!

A very useful list.
Pans with detachable handles are great. I have a Vango set of which works on induction. The handle is interchangeable with the Ingenio pans I use at home.

I don't know where you've got this idea from but it's wrong.

Been taking large (Calor type 6kg and larger) gas cylinders to France on the ferries for decades (P and O, Brittany and DFDS!), in car boots, in luggage space in hatchbacks, in trailers! Checked rules first (mainly because people regularly spread MISINFORMATION, so make sure I haven't missed any changes!) and it's permitted, and NEVER had any issues at port car checks where the cylinders are blindingly obvious! There are limits to cylinder count/amount, but well in excess of normal camping needs!

Likewise, one can take a limited amount of liquid fuel for a Coleman 424 Dual Fuel stove onto a Le Shuttle train.

As far as I can make out, the current maximum is 30L.

I would normally use less than 1L for a 7-night trip in winter, cooking a breakfast and a main meal early evening each day.

Gas and liquid fuel is not allowed as a foot passenger on a ferry. It is ok in the boot of your car on the car deck, just not allowed anywhere else. I know from experience.
Most people won't be going camping as foot passengers though unless they are backpackers.

Arriving at the security checkpoint at Newhaven Ferry Port by car this year we were asked if we had petrol in a can, camping gas cylinders, or weapons.
DFDS Ferries do not want car travellers in possession of petrol or explosive gasses on their ferries.
We were allowed the fuel in the fuel tank of the car and nothing more.
Caravans and camper vans are allowed gas cylinders in "permanently fixed" locations but cars are not allowed "loose" gas cylinders either refillable or disposable.
I have complied with these rules and use hike camping stoves and disposable gas cans while in France.

We were asked about petrol in a can by Irish ferries when travelling by car to France. They even used an electronic sniffer to check. They didnt ask about the bio-ethanol so I didn't tell them. We have never taken large gas cylinders abroad. We have always used either alcohol stoves or hiking stoves.
One thing we did find post COVID was a dearth of en314 screw on gas. It seems to have sorted itself since then. As we can always find camping gaz, I now have my old Globetrotter hiking stove converted to clic canisters. For the Trangias we can get fuel in any supermarket.

On the Newhaven-Dieppe route, the DFDS terms of travel do not inherently ban gas cylinders in cars in the terms, they certainly do for fuel cans though, but request you notify in advance you are carrying them. That doesn't of course mean they will agree to transport, they may well refuse, BUT they are not stated in terms as prohibited outright.

When we camp abroad, we take a 3-way gas fridge, and have used a variety of cylinder fed gas cookers, including a two burner plus oven Kampa Roast Master, they NEED a large gas cylinder, disposable cartridges just aren't going to suit, even if we rigged up suitable adaptors! - we'd go through cartridges at an alarming rate! Mate had a disposable cartridge version 3-way fridge, it went through cartridges at around one a day! - My fridge is a higher performance one than that, it'd eat cartridges at a ridiculous rate! We go mob handed, and catering is done for up to 10 or 12 people, we can't be cooking on 'back packing' stoves!

If DFDS won't allow us to take gas cylinders, then they CERTAINLY won't get our business!

Brittany allows up to 5L of Petrol/Diesel in a proper container. LPG can be up to 3 cylinders and/or 47Kg total, so long as secured from movement - absolutely no mention of MH/Camper/Caravan being only vehicles permitted to transport in T and Cs!

All a bit off OP subject, but does demonstrate that traps await the unwary camper, especially on foreign trips!
