Hi

Last year we bought a Coleman Quadspace tent that we have been very pleased with.

However, during August, 2004 we were subjected to several nights of severe gales, and one of the yello durawrap poles that support the outer end of one of the accomodation pods suffered a split section.

Having used the tent again during Whitsun I have noted a section in another of the yellow poles has the same fault.

Going back to where we bought the tent to try and obtain a set of replacement poles has not been successful.

As it seems near impossible to get at the knotted ends of the poles to replace the damaged sections I am minded to acquire three complete replacement poles

Can anyone on this list advise who carries god supplies of Coleman spares please?

Coleman have a spares/repairs section on their website (http://www.coleman.com/coleman/parts/PartsDefault2.asp) or you could email them.... consumerservice at coleman.com

Hi we had one of our yellow poles go too! I think its just the severe curve of the end of the bedroom pods ,we manages to repaire ours ,I know what you mean about the knots tho !! ,in the end I had to cut the elastic ,then use long nose pliers to grab hold of the knots inside the poles then pulled them out ,replacing the pole and elastic was cheep and easy enough!

Hi, I also have a Coleman Quadspace. I am very pleased with it, but I have also had two of the yellow poles split - only the yellow, none of the green, red or grey. I was told today that the Durawrap poles that Coleman use are better quality than standard fibreglass poles and they should not split. Taken with all the other reports of yellow poles splitting, it seems that we have a pattern failure here, and there is obviously a manufacturing problem with these poles.

Your first port of call is with the shop that supplied you with the tent. Your contract is with them, not with Coleman. Don't be put off by any bullsh*t about "poles are not covered by guarantee". The only phrase you need to memorise is 'The Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended)'. See www.bbc.co.uk/consumer/guides_to/law_goods.shtml for details.

However, my shop went out of business, so you could try Coleman UK (01275 845024 -1-3) ask for Jackie Lee or Valerie Scott. They will want to see your original receipt.

Good luck!

David

Hi

In the end I, too, got in touch with Valerie at Coleman. They could not have been more helpful :-)

On receipt of proof of purchase they sent me a complete set of the yellow poles which examination shows to be slightly different to the originals suggesting there was some sort of manufacturing fault.

We have used the tent several times since, using the old yellow poles only to have nearly all of thise split whereas the new ones, and the other coloured poles seem to be fine.

A couple of complete yellow poles arrived today from Coleman. I rang Valerie to thank them, and she didn't seem to be aware that there was a problem with their yellow poles, so I read her some excerpts from this topic. It's nice if we can help them to help us!

I have made a spare good pole out of two damaged ones by heating the aluminium end of the poles gently until I could persuade it to come off. Threading the elastic back down the sections was quite easy, then a knot and replace the aluminium end. Ten minutes (but then I'm not so proficient as Skatty!).

Hi

Even more of a pattern - on our first outing with ours at easter we too had one of our yellow poles split - we put it down to inexperience.

We were also unfortunate to have one of the lower metal poles bend. We were taking down the tent very carefully as there were some strong gusts but in between was quite calm. So, thinking all was going very well, until we went to take the last metal pole out of the eyelet and the tent suddenly tried to turn into a kite with the pole still firmly in the ground - oops.

Our retailer, World of Camping, seem to be having problems getting replacement poles from Coleman so will pass on Jackie and valerie's contact details which will hopefully speed things up.

Partly my fault for delay - I didn't chase them for 6 weeks as busy studying for exams last week and didn't realise until they were over that we couldn't go camping that weekend to chill out - boo hoo!!!

Really like the quadspace, although would like a SIG tent for colder months. Was considering the Monty 6, especially with Blacks currently doing it for sub £200 this weekend, but if Coleman's customer service direct is pretty good then may stick with Coleman and go for the Columbia 10 at £130.

Decisions, Decisions - especially when what I really need is a smaller tent than the Quadspace for 2/3 night weekends that can be pitched in around half an hour!!!

If you buy one of the wire rethreading needles from your camping shop you`ll find a very strong thin hook on the end. Use that to hook out your knot from the end ferrule. The needle also makes rethreading the sections very easy.

I am totally knew to this camping lark and bought a secondhand quadspace. On erecting it one of the poles split! I wrapped it in insulation/electrical tape and it seems to have secured it BUT LSR.com Lancashire Sports Repairs seem to have the hold on all spares. Will try them next week.

Cheers

Matthew
