So what`s the difference in having a small fire in a properly constructed firepit, and a gas burner?

Except, of course, you`d have to (a) lift or cut a hole in the groundsheet and (b)  cut a vent hole in the top of the fly for the smoke and (c) a gas burner is a darn sight easier to knock over ....

A few differences I can think of off the top of my head are: popping, flying embers; difficult to control high temp radiant heat; soil sterilization; lung damage. Not the least is one heck of a mess if the fire must be quenched in a hurry. I'm sure to have missed some.

Devil's in the definition of what "properly constructed" might be interpreted to mean.

That looks like a tipi with a chiminea in it...????

and being a chiminea owner myself I can vouch that everything stinks of woodsmoke even when it's used outdoors in the garden. I have to remember to close all the windows when I light it.
