Hi all, I'm new here and this is my first post.

My wife and I are planning a 4 week cycling tour from Maastricht, The Netherlands to Barcelona, Spain in mid. May, and are looking for a reasonably priced tent.

The Gelert Tornado 3 is about the right size and weight we need for the two of us with all the panniers, and enough room to spend the day in if coaght in a downpour, but have a question about the ventilation of this model. None of the sites write anything about it. And we can't seem to find any photos of the back of the tent to see if there is a window.

We were wondering if anyone has bought or has experiance with this tent. Or maybe know of something similar?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hi xilios

First off I must say welcome to site and that your intended trip is very impressive.

As far as the tent is concerned, it would be a rarity for a tent of this size to have a window in the bedroom area..  however, not owning one and taking the brochure pix only as a guide I would say not.  If I’m wrong I know that someone will be along to correct me shortly.

I own a couple of khyams at each end of the size spectrum but the TORNADO 3 looks good value for money and should well suit the perpose.

Good luck on your trip.

Davie.

i have a tornado 4 and 2 other people i know have them too.got them from halfords at half price.imo they are rubbish as the inner touches the outer at certain points around the tent.we have pitched the tents quite a few times and this still happens so it is not because we are pitching them wrong.

I have the Gelert Tornado 4 and it is a truly excellent tent.  We have been backpacking with it a few times.

Thanks for all your reply's but the main question is still to be answered.

How is the vantilation? Is there some kind on window anywhere on the tent?

It might be perfect for England also here in Holland but, is it going to be a bit hot campining in the south of France and Spain?

Cheers

Some people have bad experiences some people have good.  We have been in our Gelert in all weathers, never had a problem.  At the time I only bought it because it was cheap and light and since we wanted to just try backpacking it was ideal.  We have kept it and use it occassionly.  We have definitiely had our £39 worth out of it.  I have had bad experiences with tents costing 10 times as much.  It also depends which one of the range you buy and what you want it for.  I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable in our Tornado for an extended amount of time.  This particular model is purely a cheapie but for the price I can't fault it so far.  We have had it about a year.

I think one gets what he pay's for. I really shouldn't expect too much for that price. I'm also looking at some other more expansive tents (with a lot of vantilation) from Jack Wolfskin and Wild Country tents at http://www.outdoorfocus.co.uk/, spending 150p to 200p for a comfortable tent still beats a Hotel or B&B. My wife and I can still share the weight of the tent on our bikes.
