I'm confused... (not hard to do!)

I bought my khyam amazon a week or so ago and they very helpful chap in the shop said that although all the seams on the tent are sealed as part of the manafacturing process that the zips on the flysheet weren't (or rather where they were sewn into the fly sheet). He recommended that I buy a couple of tubes of seam sealer and seal the part where it is sewn into the fly sheet to stop any drips of water coming through. He also suggested doing the same on the nylon at the pegging points on the flysheet to stop the cotton stitching rotting.

I have just read the instructions on the seam sealing kit that came with the tent and it says 'On no account should the zips on the fly sheet or inner tent be sealed'. Am I being a... whatever you want to call me? Do the instructions refer to the zip itself or do they also refer to the nylon part that stiches to the flysheet? Should I seal everything he as suggested?

I never sealed my last tent and didn't have any problems but as I spent a bit more this time round it sounded like a good idea to take these precautions.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Yours confusedly...

Stuart

Hi

I am no expert, but I have never heard of anyone seam sealing the actual zip itself, just the seam seal where it has been stiched. Seam sealer is normally only used along the stiching line to seal the holes made by the needle as it pushed the thread through the material, as water will seep through and I am almost sure that you seam seal the stiching from the inside.

I am sure that an expert will be along shortly with more advise.

Regards

 Steve.

thanks... that is what I was wondering if the instructions refer to the actual zip rather than the stitching. I am also wary of putting the sealer on the stitching on the flysheet around the pegging points. is this normal and a good idea?

Thanks again...

Stuart
