This is from the April Camping and caravaning club magazine regarding club pitch sizes "The notional size of a Club pitch is 11m x 11m. You need to keep a 3m each side to combine with your neighbours to create a 6m fire break between units. You may have to pay for an additional pitch to fit an excessively over-sized tent, ask when making your booking."
this was printed in answer to a letter "I am considering a large family tent with three sleeping pods will this fit on a Club site pitch.
So that seems like a definative answer from them at last
Well that's plenty large enough, for our tent with annexe and the car too. But I knew that anyway, as I stay on a few C.& C.C. sites...
Mind you, If they actually start to 'enforce' that 'six metre' rule, there could be a few 'problems', particularly with one or two of the larger tents. Lets hope 'common sense' rather than rules prevail. We'll see...

AP666, in my experience, they do. I've often been accompanied to the pitch by a warden who has (always very politely) reminded me of the rule & pointed out where we should be. Doesn't worry us - gives us plenty of room - but it would be unwise to visit a C&C site thinking that you could ignore it.

same here ,They nearly always go with you in front of the car on a bicycle and occasionally goose step the six metres out with the warning not to break the six metre rule or you will be asked to shift it.
I always try and get as far away as poss from the neighbours pitch anyway but if they are sticking you between pitches it can be ocassionally tricky.
I think it should be more than 6 metres anyway ,not keen on being too close to other people in a tent.
We have a sunncamp festiva which is sort of cross shaped with the porch and measures 7mX7m so we always phone ahead. We went to Scarborough C&CC site for 2 weeks and yes he came with us on his bike and told us where to put it. We put it exactly where he said, pleased that we were a decent space from our neighbours. 3 days later when we were well settled and the kids had spread their stuff out as they do, he came past at tea time and very shortly told us we'd have to move it as we'd put it in the wrong place!!! We were not pleased as my husband had double checked with him on the day where he wanted us pitched, and he'd also cycled past us quite a few times over the three days, but he was adament that we were wrong. To be fair to him he did come and give us a hand to move it that evening (no mean feet moving a 12 berth without collapsing it too much I can tell you!!) and he didn't go until we had every last item back in the tent. But next time I'll give them a tent -peg and they can stick it in the exact spot!!!!
I dont understand all this about pitch sizes. We have a large tent which suits our family,we couldn't live for two weeks in a tent that doesn't have the space we need,so why should we feel pressured into cramping ourselves into a tiny tent? Our tent is standard shape,we have also had a Outwell Hartford XL,another big tent, but took up more room on the pitch due to its odd shape! We have never had to pay for a second pitch ,although i know some people have, but we do tend to stick to sites we know and where we have taken the tent before. I know they like to cramp as many people onto the site as possible, but our tents are our homes whilst away,we need space!

so what they saying is any tent or van with awning over 5 meters wide wont fit if you take away your 3+3 meters each side from 11 meters.
That's certainly the way I read it, my tent is by no means the biggest out there but it won't fit that criteria.

I suspect its more about charging you double rather than anything else.
No - it's always been this way, since long before tents grew to the size many are now. They really are very focused on the fire risk. And IMO, the bigger gaps between tents do give their sites a more relaxed feel.
I actually think a lot of their pitch sizes are much bigger than 11x11 - and that's why they refer to a "notional" size. I don't think it's common to have to pay for two pitches.
The other thing is, they will enter your tent size on their booking computer, so if you book in advance they will know you've got a big tent and will do their best to reserve you a suitable pitch.
They are not perfect, but in my experience apart from the odd stroppy warden they do seem to try hard to make things as easy as possible for you.
I've been a member of the C&CC, on and off, for more than twenty years. They have always had the 6 meter rule. It really is a safety thing. If you have ever seen a tent or caravan catch alight (I have!) it's a terrifying sight. A burning tent is more than capable of igniting it's neighbours if they are too close. Ok, so your tent may be made of FR material but you can't guarantee that your neighbour's is! If you want to get up close and personal with your neighbours that's fine, but it's your equipment you're putting at risk, and ultimately your life!!!!
If you go camping in a wedding marquee, let the site know before you pitch, I'm sure they'll find space for you somewhere.
I quite like this rule as it stops people pitching right on top of you and keeps the noise down. Very big tenst should be charged at a higher rate IMO as they take up more room and therefore the site can't fit as many units on. After all you are renting a patch of land for the night and if you use up more land than most you should pay for it.
