I have just bought the black shrimp from our local dealer here in Helsinki. I was looking for a bargain and he pointed out some display models that were on sale and told me the Robens was the best of the bunch and that i could have it for 150 euro, he told me the original retail price was 358 euro.
Anyway i have checked the tent and all seems fine. However there was no manual with the tent and i cant find anything at the robens website. I would like the pitching instructions and perhaps some basic info about my new tent.
Me and my wife intend on spending 2 weeks at the end of July in the snowdonia mountains.
welcome to the site, although i don't know anything about your particular tent i am sure someone will be along soon who will be able to advise you. Have you looked on the internet?
Hi Peter, we have a Black Shrimp and it would depend on whether you have a 2005 model or an earlier one as they are slightly different.
The main difference is with the 3 poles, if all your poles are the same length you have a 2004 or earlier version. Just thread your poles through the sleeves on the outer and peg it out. Dead easy.
If you have one pole longer than the other 2 you have a 2005 version, this longer pole goes into the middle sleeve on the tents outer, the shorter ones go into the other 2 sleeves (doesn't matter which goes where as they are the same length). Again, very simple and quick to put up.
We always take our Black Shrimp with us when we camp as a back up in case its to stormy to put our larger, main tent up, as its light and small packed up it doesnt take any space in the car. It doesnt come with a groundsheet for the living area so I would recommend buying one so you aren't sitting on wet grass in the porch area.
Something I forgot to mention before is that the poles go into nylon webbing 'pockets' on one side then into adjustable plastic cups on the other, these need to be slackened off to make it easier to get the poles in then can be tightened when pegging out.
The first picture below is the Robens Dreamer and is identical in shape to the older version Black Shrimp. The second picture is the Little Dreamer and is identical in shape to the 2005 Black Shrimp, hopefully the point I made on the earlier post about pole lengths will be clearer now.
Also Peter, I've just found our instructions for the Black Shrimp but they are the same as for the Little Dreamer, i.e. very basic, which Avril posted the link too above my posts, if you would like a copy of it I can scan it into my pc and email it to you if you would like.
Some technical info for you, the Hydrostatic Head of the outer and the inner groundsheet are 5000mm, the poles are Alloy #7001 T6 (which might mean something to someone) and are very light. The weight is 4.5kg and it is recommended as an all round trekking tent for all year use.
And thank you for all of your efforts and help with my problem. You have been very, very helpful.
I took out the poles again last night and i have 2 short 1 long, so i assume it is the 2005 model. I notice you say that you keep the shrimp as backup for stormy weather. How has it performed for you in the past Paullyn.
Again, thanks to all that replied and offered advice.
To be honest we haven't camped in stormy weather in it but we do take it everywhere with us as its so small. We've only used it on 2 occasions, both times for overnight stops as we didn't want to go to the trouble of putting our main tent up for one night.
The picture of our tent in my previous post is at Ullapool on the west coast of Scotland. We enjoyed the site and the area so much we stopped for 3 nights instead of the 1 night as we'd intended to do and were so impressed with the Black Shrimp, our main tent stopped in the car. We were lucky with the weather so our tent was really just used as a bedroom and we spent our time on the site sitting outside. We had originally bought it to have a go at backpacking as its fairly light and quite roomy for 2 people but so far haven't been brave enough to try that yet.
It is a really good quality tent and if you can live without the headroom of a bigger tent you'll love it.
Incidentally we are going to North Wales in June so we'll let you know if we have any problems with it if the weathers rough.
