As a first timer about to go on our first outing we were concerned about the level of securty found on sites.

Is it common practice to close up your tent for few hours or is there a protocol to follow with items such as sleeping bags/fridge etc stowed away in the car?

We ask as we have no good or bad experinces

Thanks in anticipation of your replies

Hi Welcome to the site

there have been loads of posts about this topic have a read through and you'll get loads of advice i think the bottom line is don't leave any valuables in the tent if you go out and leave anything on show!

you'll have a great time and won't even think about security

take care

foxy

In the 20 years of camping we have only been broken into once while we were a sleep. They took our toiltery* bag and cut the window. so in all I dont think that is to bad as we do camp 5 or 6 times a year.

I have never had any problems at all despite a rather haphazard approach to security. The only effort I make is to put my handbag/barbag in the end of the sleeping compartment away from the zip at night. I occasionally put my bike in the car if there are odd looking types around, but usually I rely on it looking like and old man's bike to deter thieves! I only put chairs etc in the car to stop them getting wet in the dew so that I can sit on them for breakfast.

Hi, i have never had any problems and i always leave cooker and other gear outside my tent even when we are out all day. However we always camp on small campsites without clubhouse or pool etc,and you tend to find most of the campers on these sites are friendly and do tend help each other. I would'nt be keen on leaving too much gear on display on the large sites with statics on hire etc as with all things if you have a large amount of people you have a greater chance of having problems.

Shotty has a good point though, keep your food secure and zip up when out or the wildlife does tend to help itself to anything that looks tasty.

If I see anyone going in a tent they shouldn't near me, they go on the barby.

People in tents look out for one another mate.

Don't worry.

Use your common sense and you won't be disappointed.

I'm new to this forum too!

We've never had a problem. We used to have a small padlock on the inner door of our ridge tent just to lock the zips together. With the frame tent, just move things out of sight and peg the zip down. I know it won't stop them, but it may make them think twice, especcially if there are people about.

Mad, isn't it? At home you've got door and window locks and intruder alarms, and then you go camping and leave your stuff with nothing more than zips and fabric for protection!

Hi & welcome to the forum ianick

When you go out just make sure you take things like camera, cd player, money & watches etc. with you. You shouldn't need to worry about items like the fridge, sleeping bags, cooker etc.

It's a good idea to say Hi to neighbouring campers, cos that way they should remember your faces and will therefore know if a stranger goes near your tent.

I've never had anything taken from our tent, except by creatures of the four legged or feathered variety , so relax and enjoy your camping holidays.

I find that most campers look out for each other so there should not be any problems.  The only thing is to lock valuables away if you leave the tent for a long period of time.
