We have a volvo estate and a dog that takes up all our boot space. We need to be able to take everything we need in a roof box ie 9 person outwell family dome tent, table, beds, duvets, clothes etc. Is it possible to do this with a large roof box? What sort of size would we need?
we got a 350l roof box for our ford escort, holds 50kg and we were struggling for room, i was hoping to get loads in it but it filled too quickly.we only went away for 2 nights last week and we were cramming stuff in the roofbox and boot and was still struggling.
I have a 600litre box that eats kit but you have to watch the weight. I would never put a heavy tent in it for example. A 60kg tent would be the max you could carry really unless you have roof rails.

I guess we could put the tent in with the dog although not sure how comfortable he would be then for a long drive. Wouldnt you need roof rails anyway for a roof box?
We have a 400 box and manage to fit in, 1 outwell xxl tent (not the poles!), 4 sleeping bags, 2 double airbeds and a weekend size holdall (plus any odds and ends where we can find space). We always take the dog in his crate and find that this saves much more space than if he is 'loose' as we can pack foldup tables/chairs, cooker etc, all around the crate.
Not only will the roofbox have a weight limit, so will the car. Check your handbook and don't forget to included the roofbars. A 9 man tent is going to take up 40 or 50 kg. A trailer would probably be your best bet.

you is limit by the weight limit of the box a good rack can hold upto 100kg max but the boxes only can hold 60kg tops no matter how big.
invest in a trailer simple fix and lots of room for you all .
I can't imagine it would be a good idea to have a heavier load in the roof box than in the boot, Car might topple!
Too much weight in the roof box is a really bad idea especially skelping along the motorway the steering would be all over the place. there 's 5 of us and a lurcher with 10 berth tent and we get all our gear in our estate car fairly easy, It's practise, and we don't rough it but i'm v careful not to pack anything i won't deffo use our mutt tends to squeeze in the passenger footwell with the chair right back but she is a very quiet dog might not do for all dogs!
