We're camping in the Isle of Wight this summer and I was wondering if any of you who have been know which port,Porthsmouth or Lymington is easier to reach? Or is there not much in it?
Silly question I know but trying for the smoothest trip(no falling out over directions)
It all depends where you are coming from, if say from london direction, then Portsmouth (straight down the A3 , Lymingtons ok if you are coming from dorset/somerset/wiltshire, you can go from Southampton (probably the 'middle ground' ) straight down the M3, the choice is yours!
------------- The world is full of Kings & Queens who'll blind your eyes & steal your dreams, thats heaven & hell
Wightlink cover Portsmouth & Lymington. Red Funnel cover Southampton. The prices are about the same. If you enjoy a longer trip, then go from Southampton to Cowes. We used Wightlink from Portsmouth to Fishbourne.
It also depends on where you are camping on the IOW. Do you want to embark at Yarmouth (Lymington), Fishbourne near Ryde (Portsmouth), or Cowes (Southampton) ? Although the island's so small, the distance between the three ports is only a short drive.
Thanks for the info. I'll be using the Wightlink service as it's covered by my Tesco Clubcard vouchers. So it's just the choice of either the Lymington or Portsmouth route.
The distances are more or less the same to both ports, I was just wondering whether Portsmouth was easier to navigate than Lymington as it's a bigger place.
I'd say Lymington- it's really easy to find and you don't get snared up in town traffic as with Portsmouth, and, at the other end, all that's there, really, is the ferry terminal, not the mayhem of Cowes! We stayed at the east end of the island so it was a longer drive, but hey, it's the Isle of Wight and driving around the country lanes is part of the charm! Have a good trip, whatever you decide to do.
