at the end of the day if you have electrical equipment in a tent you have to be careful. the sites EHU already has a 30 mA rated Rcd most of the EHU you buy loose their IP rating once youve plugged youre appliance in anyway. And a how many of youre appliances are resistant to condensation ?

What does IP mean? Ingress Protection?

Bit of a daft idea perhaps as I have no idea about EHU in a tent, but if you used a triple extension, could you not just cover the unused sockets with child protection covers?

We got a "sideways" one from Yeomans in Northampton last year. They were also selling the vertical ones and, from memory, the prices were pretty much the same.

IP does indeed stand for Ingress Protection, Valkscot. It's a numeric method to describe the ability of a (Ingress Protection Codes) product to withstand contamination by solids or liquids. Specified by BS4752 and IEC 144etc.

So, what are the IP ranges? Anyone know? Don't all EHUs sold have to comply?

The proper purpose built ones will, no doubt comply. The lash ups commonly found on Ebay will almost certainly not.
You can check the labelling on the product. It will state IP, followed by 2 digits. The first digit (range between 0 and 6) relates to dust protection, the second digit (range between 0 and 8) relates to water protection. In both cases 0 is unprotected and the higher figure would be dust tight and protected against submersion. The full chart, as far as water / moisture is concerned is:

0   Non-protected

1   Protected against dripping water

2   Protected against dripping water when tilted up to 15°

3   Protected against spraying water

4   Protected against splashing water

5   Protected against water jets

6   Protected against heavy seas

7   Protected against the effects of immersion

8   Protected against submersion
