Hello - only me again!
I wonder if any of you know much about the Jack Wolfskin tents. There only appear to be 3 threads on them here so I assume not many people have them.
I know they're expensive, but I quite fancy one.
We are 2 adults, 4 kids (3 to 12) and the Hacienda one sleeps up to seven - so no problem there.
My current shortlist is
Vango Colorado 800 (but I don't like the colour!)
Khyam Indiana 8
and now thie JW thing.
I don't like wasting money but I have been saving!
Cheers
Pete
Hi Pete
Hacienda RT looks like a cool tent - might look into one of these myself. Flysheet has a HH of 4000mm which is good (I think!) Do you know if its inner or outer pitch first?
All the best
Richard
Hi Richard.
I've just been on the www.jackwolfskin.de site where you can look at the "erection" instructions! It's outer first and looks like it's a piece of cake. The sleep compartments have their own groundsheets built in, and there is a bath-tub (or riser) ground sheet for the main area.
It ain't cheap though, is it! Cheapest I've seen is just over £400, which is double the price of the Khyam Indiana 8! But, it's got alloy poles instead of fibreglass, an integrated tarp that goes under the sleep compartments and living area, and the bathtub groundsheet goes on top of that. And putting it up just looks so easy. And it's so light. Damn, damn - until this morning it was definitelt the Indi 8, but now......
I suppose I could always buy it, use it and then sell it before the boss knows what it cost!
Hi Pete
It does look very easy to put up which is a high priority for me. My Vango Aspen 700 is a real effort to get up and peg out. Almost put me off camping!
Cheers
Richard
I have a JW Ocean View tent and am thrilled with it.
Lightweight.
Mosquito mesh on all doors.
Skylight (with mesh or without)
Light coloure dmaterial so it doesn't look like a dark, dank cave (Had a Cabanon frame!!!)
Bathtub design.
Rolls up/ packs away extremely small.
We, my wife and I, can get it up in less than half an hour easily. Pegging is extra, but not much. Ours has four lightweight poles, threaded, and pulled up "pram hood" style. Simple.
Cheers Kilroy. I'm going to go look at the Hacienda later in the week. I was having trouble justifying the money. But I've just got a really nice North Face Bedrock off a great fella on ebay, and it makes the quality of some other stuff seem really poor, but I'm hoping the JW will match it.
Ta, Pete
Peter, I hate to rain on your parade but a family of six would be really really squashed in a Hacienda - we have one, so I think I know what I'm talking about!
The Hacienda is a great tent, good quality, very fast up and down, brilliant ground sheet blah blah blah - and we love ours for a weekend/shortstay tent - but Wolfskin really overstate their tent occupancy in my view. The Hacienda is described as having one five person inner, well that is 270 cms wide at one end tapering to (I think ) 190 cms. OK, it is slightly longer than average but that is still going to be a push even for four children. We have only ever used the small 'two person' inner for storage because it is 'sideways on to the door' layout and the end wall of the inner is very floppy - so I cannot see two adults being comfortable in there. So a great tent for us but maybe not for a larger family.
I can see the Vango Colorado 800 is on your list but you don't like the colour. I agree, it looks like a really good tent and excellent vfm but I too would be put off by the colour. It might be worth investigating a Coleman Magellan 9 - very similar design but green! Also lighter weight as the dome poles are alloy. The magellan 9 has got a SIG but fly sheet first erection: hooray. The first models into the shops had some problems with the porch poles, so you would need to check whether that has been sorted. MT
Hi Merry Terrier (we have a year old Border Terrir X Jack Russell and she's a pretty merry one too :-) )
Thanks for the heads up on the Hacienda. Mmm, maybe not such a good idea after all. Although, saying that, we do have extra occupancy in our Mitsubishi Delica - the intention is to have 2 sleeping on the bed in there. Main priority I suppose would be day space, but if that's tiny as well then perhaps the Hacienda is a no no.
The info on the Magellan 9 is useful - definitely seems to be plenty of space there, and I do much prefer the ally poles. I'm going to look round now for a dealer close to Brighton so I can have a look. The price from World of Camping is great though.
Why, oh why, oh why, are so many tents produced in colours that look like decade old shell suits???
Hi, the Hacienda is not a 'tiny' tent - its overall footprint is 6m x 3m and it suits us very wel - but I can't see it working for a larger group I'm afraid. When the small inner is in place (we usually leave it out) the living space reduces to 2m x 3m , which would average out at about 1 sq m per person in your family! Good luck with your tent hunt. MT
