Hi all,

Well I have booked us into a campsite, we are going for 3 nights in the May school holiday, it is just for a practice run as it is out first time, and we are not going too far away from home, we are going to a campsite in Filey, it had a good review in the campsite search tool on here.

Anyway, I wanted to ask, we have bought 2 season sleeping bags, will these be warm enough at the end of May, or will we need to take extra blankets aswell? Hate being cold at night! I have read some of you take a duvet, but dont know if we have got the space for that, and seems a bit excessive when we have sleeping bags.

Also, I am a bit confused about condensation.  will our beds get wet if we sleep on a roll mat underneath the sleeping bag? We have a normal (not sewn in) groundsheet. Do you need to air the tent out in the morning?

Thanks, and happy camping to you all,

Ruth xx

Personally, if you've got two season bags I'd take something extra along be it a blanket or whatever just in case you are cold (I think a duvet would be overkill). Everyone feels different - I use a 4 season bag and fleece liner all year (normally unzipped and used like a duvet, but I have been known to be completely cocooned on cold nights - I'm not a warm person at night). Once you've been on your first trip you'll know how you get on and whether you'll need to take them again.

We used to use roll mats (use Thermarests now, so not much different). We have always used tents without a SIG, just the usual bedroom inner. We've never had a problem with condensation. If it's a really cold night we may find a bit on the top of our bag, but nothing that requires airing, it soon dries out during the day of it's own accord. We never "air the tent" specifically, apart from the morning that we are packing away.

Happy 1st trip.

Hiya Ruth,

We used to cart around quilts but they took up half of the boot space in the car so we invested in some decent 4 season sleeping bags. Unlike my hubby I feel the cold so unless it is real warm I also take along a comforting hottie bottle to keep my feet warm.

If you like your warmth, then as LizG says, I would definitely take along a blanket or woolly jumper & socks in case it is cold.

Whatever happens enjoy the experience - you will learn what is best for you as you go along.

yes i have a 4 season bag too,but dont use it this time of year so i take a 2season bag.i sleep warm though.just take some extra cloths to wear in bed if needed.if you decide you enjoy camping then it would be good to invest in some self inflating mats for extra comfort.some people prefer the big airbeds but we dont find them comfy.i was camping at easter in snowdonia and slept like a baby in my 2 season bag.i was drunk though

a wee drink is good advice for warming up.. especially as few campsites allow fires these days...
