I don`t quite understand what you mean, sorry. Is there literally an eight inch gap between the bottom of the mud wall and the ground?
Remember in canvas tents the mud wall has to go part way up the side to protect the cotton canvas from soaking up water from puddles. Then there`s usually a bit of extra to tuck under the groundsheet. In my last TT the mud wall was about 18" high, with six inches of extra to tuck under. The rubber loops were placed accordingly, at what would be ground level.
And the poles adjusted heightwise too, to allow for slopes and bumps and dips. You could end up with the mud wall dangling in mid air but that was simply adjusted by shortning the poles down.
