We are looking to buy for use this year, a large four bedroomed tent with plenty of living room, ideally with a porch, but we have read that some tents are so large you can have trouble finding campsites that will accept them, especially if you want a EHU. We have been looking at the Nebraska XL but are worried if we buy one that size we will be limited as to where we can camp. Does anyone have any advice on large tents that are readily accepted on the majority of campsites? We have heard talk of `footprints` and would appreciate any help on choosing a tent that will fit our criteria yet not make us limited for campsites.

Thanks.

Hi, We have a Vango Diablo 900. We've never really had any problems with getting a pitch on campsites. This is probably due to the campsites we use more than the size of our tent though. We've booked into Greenacres (nr. Glastonbury) this year. We've been there a few times but this will be our first year with EHU. I think the EHU pitches are limited in numbers at this site but not in tent size.

Like I said, we havn't had any problems but I could imagine that there will be some sites that could have issues with tent sizes, like some of the ones we used in the past, before the kids made us buy a bigger tent!

Here's a link to the diablo900 on amg-outdoors site. You'll probably find a cheap one if you type it into 'Froogle' though.

Hope this helped, and hope you have a good summer!!!

We've bought a Outwell Hartford L.  It's footprint is 630 cm x 310 cm.  Sorry I can't offer any advice about general acceptance of larger tents but I would contact the site of your choice in advance.  I'm made enquiries and bookings for two different places this year.  One has responded by offering a caravan pitch, the other offering two tent pitches.  They are charging a few pound a night extra to a normal size pitch price.

Hope this is of some help.

Take a peep in the camp site part of the message board. There's a thread near the top which is dedicated to sites which accept large tents. Alternatively give any chosen camp sites a ring.

We bought a Kyham Ultimate Classic this year. Its got four bedrooms and a nice big porch. Never had any problems with pitch size with it, or with our old Diablo 600. You can always ask when booking if they accept large tents.

When I did a bit of reserach last year, it seems that a good size to stick to is no bigger than 7m by 7m.  This will suit the majority of campsites.  You will still find a few that have smaller pitches but sticking to that size caters for most of them.

Having said that, I have had much bigger tents than that and not really had a problem finding a pitch, but we do use sites that we have used in the past and like.  All of these ones take large tents and all their pitches are over 10m by 10m.
