You also have to be carefull when you pull the poles apart. If you pull too hard, the spring inside comes out ( all you see is some black elastic ) and then they are a pain to put together again. If this does happen get a thin fibreglass pole and push them back down and give a tap with a mallet. When mine have locked, I find just tapping the joint with the mallet helps release them.
