can anyone explain what a bathtub inner groundsheet is....my friend was camping at the weekend and got flooded out and is now looking for a new tent...budget is £ 150.00 for a 6 berth tent any suggestions?????
Hi Keren, Never heard of the bath tub inner, but best advice for a tent for your friend would be to view them erected and decide which one is more suitable for her needs, and budget. Good luck on the other question.
I would say that most inners have a bath-tub groundsheet anyway - as the waterproof surface of the floor runs up the sides of the inner a few centimetres.
I think the bath-tub groundsheet is similar but it is for the main living area, and combines the best bits of a detachable groundsheet - you can remove it to clean, and to put away - but with the benefits of a SIG where there is reduction in draughts and an element of defences against flooding as the edges of the groundsheet are clipped a small way up the sides of the tent - making a 'bath-tub' shape.
The bathtub groundsheet is like your standard groundsheet but it turns up all around the edges ( like the shape of a bathtub ) to give a better seal. For water to come in, the water level outside would have to be about 6 inches high before it flowed over the top of the shape, if this was the case you would have more pressing problems to worry about. The bathtub groundsheet does produce a better seal than the standard groundsheet and is detachable just like a standard groundsheet. It doesn't provide as good as a seal as a SIG, but it is about as close as its going to get. You will still get some draughts through and insects can make their way through it, but its a very good compromise between a standard groundsheet and a SIG.
The 2006 montana by outwell has a bathtub ground sheet
I think its when the part in front of the doors can fold out flat during the day ,but they can be folded back up and held in place with velcro when it rain or at night.
I think its to stop you or children falling out of your tent when it has a sew in ground sheet like my silly sister ,
Our Gelert Quebec has a sewn-in-ground sheet. It has two massive bedrooms, a nice living area - supposed to sleep 8 in the bedrooms - and I reckon you could, quite comfortably. They are about £185, though I think if you shop around, you can get cheaper, know that's slighty over budget, but I think it rocks!!!
The vango diablo has tub groundsheet in the porch..it clips ont o the outer a few inches up thus creating the bathtub, although it is cut away at the doors so as not to be a trip hazard either.
Finally, look for a thick, durable groundsheet. The best we've used is the one from Macpac, which we've never known to leak, and while you can supplement a built-in floor with an extra undersheet or 'footprint' it shouldn't really be necessary. You'll often see the term bathtub used with groundsheets, that means the proofed material forms a tub, usually around 4-6 inches high, meaning the tent can surivive minor floods without leaking. A good thing :-)
