Yes, I used to have a light board when I had my boat, didn't realise they fitted easily on these.  What I really meant, I think, was that when you think of what you have to fit and everything, surely a trailer is easier and cheaper, and has more space.  Plus, if you are buying things like roofboxes, trailers, carry bags, it really means you are out of space and the boot space is probably full ( well thats how it is when I go camping ).  So putting this on the back or a really heavy tent could be putting an awfull lot of strain on the back of the car.  I know that if I have my biggest tent in the boot and all the other stuff, the back is quite down. I wouldn't really want to put a heavy cargo bag on the back as well.  At least with the trailer, I can have about 300KG distributed over another axle with limited weight pushing down on the back of the car.

At the end of the day, I havn't tried one, just looked at them, so I can't really knock them.

This is the Khyam cargo rack and bag:

Khyam Cargo Rack

The Cargo Rack simply drops onto a standard 50mm ball hitch (you get rid of that with talc) at the rear of your car and will immediately double the loading capacity of most mid-sized saloons. Perfect for use with the Khyam Cargo Bag, the Rack will also happily accommodate mountain bikes, bags of garden refuse, and a myriad of other items.

Khyam Cargo Bag

The Khyam Cargo Bag is designed to hold all tents in the Ridgi-Dome Range (not at once). It is a durable, fully waterproof bag fitted with multiple compression straps, grab handles and tough polycarbonate wheels so you can easily move the contents into pitching position. Designed for use with the Khyam Cargo Rack but can also be used by itself.

Dimensions: 120 x 50 x 50cm;

I have been looking at these for years, despite that we have a trailer and roof box. The thing that appeals to me is that it, although it clearly does not hold nearly as much as a trailer, it is ideal for weekends away or when you do not need to take so much swag and has no speed restrictions as there are when towing.

The other thing, which recently occurred to me whilst reading a thread on here about mice munching their way through tents whilst in storage, is that the cargo bag would surely be an ideal way to store the tent etc over winter - tougher than any tent bag and easy to move around because of the wheels.

I have decided to put my money where my mouth is, so have ordered one today - I will let you know if it turns out to be a success story or a disaster!

Seems I won't be reporting the virtues (or vices) of this, after all, since our order was submitted to outdoormegastore last Thursday we didn't hear a thing other than order confirmation when we had given our account details via internet. Just telephoned them and they claim they sent an email stating items were out of stock (received nothing), they have, however, debited our account.

Not too happy about this, so have cancelled the order and am advised 'the paperwork will be sent to their returns department for refund'. How can you return something you never had, and which was never in stock in the first place?

Feel it is a dubious practice to debit funds prior to confirming items are in stock!

Oh well, back to the drawing board! Does anyone know where else these items are available, at this price (or less?)

As an alternative, I got a Thule 903 bike carrier, then Fiamma do a fabric bag that straps on to "their" bike carriers.  Last year we had a week in Devon - could fit my Khyam and other stuff in the fabric bag, with my daugher's bike on there also.

Meant we could do 80 on the motorway, rather than 60.... when you're doing a few hundred miles with 2 young kids, this makes a difference !

We had a roof box first wasn't big enough so sold it and got a erde trailer.....guess what still not big enough so went and bought a fc just about there now but it seems to me the more space you have ,you have to fill it not sure why but i think we are all in the same boat and its getting heavy.
