Don't laugh but for a holiday later in the year I'm thinking about taking two tents, one to sleep in and one to use as storage etc.

Anybody do this and how do sites view the costing? In other words is it two pitches etc.

Just its in October. On this one  trip I'll leave my scooter behind and use public transport.

Just a thought really.

Thanks, Ian

Most sites charge a pound or two for putting up a pup tent along side your main tent. I have never done it myself but seen the charges in the price menus when I'm looking for sites.

C&CC sites don't charge if you have say a tent for sleeping/living in & maybe a small utility type tent for use as a kitchen tent (not gazebos - they're a bit different & may well be charged for). Indeed we've just come back from a week at a C&CC site and we had the Khyam Igloo for sleeping in and a Wynnster Utility tent for cooking in, and we were only charged for one pitch (it did easily fit into one pitch anyway, unlike some outfits on the site which were pushing the boundaries of how big you can go!)

Mmmmm, in October I would think that most camp sites will be desperate for the trade, so it's worth being a bit cheeky when you 'phone them

Obviously they will both be small tents, and pitched close together, so should easily fit on one pitch. I think you should get away with paying for just one pitch, or one person on the sites which charge per person instead of per unit

If you mean this as a main tent plus a utility tent or day room, then it`s one pitch charge normally  (if auxilliary tents allowed and depending on the size of the main tent) plus any auxilliary tent fee.

If however you mean two normal family tents, like two six man domes (?) then I think you`ll have to do a bit of negotiating, even if they do fit on the pitch.

If you mean two 2-3 man pup tents, then I don`t see the problem at all, assuming auxilliary tents are allowed. One is the main tent and the other the pup tent and they`re certain to fit on the pitch.

Some campsites state one tent per pitch, no auxilliary tents. Others charge per pitch/number of people and don`t care what you put up. And some campsites will charge you for putting a tarp down on the ground for the dog, plus dog fee.

Clear as mud? Basically, you need to look at the tarrif page for each campsite and work it out from there. Then if in doubt ask nicely. I doubt you`ll have much problem in October anyway.

How many nights are you going to be away for? It might be to cheaper, and more comfortable,  to buy a larger tent to do both jobs than pay the pitch fees for the seconda tent - depending on which site you picked. MT

Was on a site near Dartmoor last year which charged per pitch to incl 2 adults, everything else extra (we had been before but there were new owners). I was surprised to learn on arrival of the extortionate price for our two children and of a pup tent as extras.

When I pointed out to the guy that according to his rates it was actually cheaper to pay for two pitches side by side with one tent, one adult and one child on each rather than pay for one pitch + the supplement for each child + the cost of the second tent ………. he thought I was being funny.

My expressed view that I was actually doing him a favour by only using one pitch and thus deserved a discount fell on stony ground. The concept was probably beyond him.

Funny old world, init, Dave

Do all campsites charge for two adults or can you just pay per tent as there are 6 of us. I have also found that in some cases it would be cheaper to take two tents rather that pay for the extra people as they are all adults. Any suggestions.

If you know which campsite you are heading for its got to be worth while phoning and talking to them to find out if they have any problems with your set up. I wouldnt just turn up on spec if you are likely to be upset by being charged for two tents. Forwarned is forarmed as they say.

Mike
