It wasn't exactly a camping necessity but one year we were going to go to Cornwall after work on Friday night. The weather was awful but we thought we should just go and get set up anyway. I had all the gear packed, my other half's stuff and our underwear in a holdall - all my skirts / trousers and tops were hanging up ready to be hung in the car. We travelled all the way from Warwickshire to nearly Bristol on the M5 (no, really) before it dawned on me that I only had the clothes I was sitting in and all my clothes were still hanging in our flat. I made my OH turn round and we went home and set off again the following morning! It was just as well because when we finally got to cornwall on saturday afternoon the campsite owner told us the weather was so bad the night before there's no way we'd have managed to pitch at all!
