Thanks for all the advice about Montanas in the past - we are now proud owners of one!
However, despite having read all the helpful hints and tips about putting it up, we still had a pretty difficult time setting it on the in-laws lawn last week - or maybe that's just normal for first timers! The roof poles, once the tent was up, leaned this way and that, and we couldn't tension the roof so it was nice and smooth. On the poles, I know they are shaped to fit a certain way, but there still seemed to be some play in the way they fitted together. Is this normal? We are going to try and set it up again this w/e. Am sure we will be okay after a few goes at it, but any further advice welcomed!

Ok, there will always be some movement in the poles, it is designed that way so that it is not completely static in the wind.

But, there should not be a noticeable movement, the roof should be reasonably taught to look at.

Once you get all five pole sections up, pull all the side poles so they are taught in both directions ( width and length ).  Then the end guy ropes need to be pulled out so the end poles are upright and fairly taught at both ends.  You can then go round and pull the adjusters tight on the ends and one side so that the tent is fairly tight and the groundsheet is flat.  You must make sure that the fabric is fairly centred across the roof poles else it will be uneven on one side.

When you are pegging the tent out like this and pulling everything taught, make sure the doors are zipped shut otherwise you may have trouble closing them afterwards ( the doors should be semi-open when you are putting the tent up so that air can rush in otherwise you will be pulling it against a semi vacuum ).

The end guy ropes have quite a important task in this design because they not only stop the tent blowing away in the wind, but they also keep the structure right at the ends so they do tend to feel a bit tighter than the other guy lines as they will always have the ends pulling against them.

Thanks once again Steve. Judging by the array of tents you have, your help is the best I could ask for! How do you possibly get to use them all - Have you considered becoming a rep for Outwell?!

I could never be a rep.  I use the tents in different situations.  The one that got most used upto yet was the Monty 12, but we have now got to the stage where our eldest daughter doesn't want to go with us a lot of the time anymore, so we tend to use the Montana 6 a lot more now.  The Nebraksa we use when we want the space but only want to take one tent ( without the utility tent and shortish stays ).  The Monty 4 we use when it is just me and the OH.  The Montana 12 now only really gets used when we all go away and we take a guest.  I just like the tents and learning about them.  I never intended getting this many tents but they just took my fancy when I saw them so I tried to find a use for them.
