We have a frame tent and cook inside. Most people with domes have utility tents.
I've been camping for years and only recall once seeing a tent with a utility tent alongside!
If the rain is light we'll just put out waterproofs on and cook outside - a drop of rain is no big deal. If it's hammering down we'll either eat out or set up the cooker under the cover of our tent door flap - we find this provides enough cover and the cooker isn't actually in the tent (obviously we make sure that the exit isn't blocked).
We used a fishing umberella for 6 years, but after one particular wet and very windy summer decided to cook in the tent, we dont cook anything with hot fat and never had a problem but I do think the utility tents look really good and if we didn't now have a tt Id invest in one of them, but if you dont want to spend that much the fishing umberella does the job and we use it as a sun shade as well.
We usually set up in the porch if there is a hint of heavy rain, but usually we have managed to get outside with our windbreaks creating a cooking area..... no roof obviously though....
I fancy a utility tent but I am not allowed one!!!!!
If there's standing room we just cook inside the tent, raining or not. As long as it's not touching the sides there's no problems. Bigger frame tents have a cooking area built in, if it's good enough for them it's good enough for me. You're not cooking with a flame thrower you know!
This thread just reminded me of our trip to Cornwall last October. It was hammering down with rain and blowing a gale, but we managed to rig up a shelter of sorts with a tarp attached to the open car boot and a couple of tent poles. We managed to cook a curry from scratch with rice and naan - and very tasty it was too.
Hit nearest cafe, i use a fishing brolley i also made a wind breaker type thing out of a old frame tent, Will not cook in tent smell stops in tent for ages
Last year we had the same problem but had a gazebo next to the tent and used that for cooking in, it's one of those ones with netting sides so you still feel like you're outside but just not getting wet. We wasn't charged any extra for it as it fitted on the pitch size we was given, i think all campsites are different though and some will charge for Gazebo/dayroom.
Alternatively you could take a George Grill, fantastic for camping (as long as you have EHU!) you can cook anything on it (within reason) Buy a portion of chips from the nearest chippie while OH is cooking some chicken breasts on the George - Hey Presto!
Toaster is another fab idea as is slow cooker mentioned above! - Who needs a Gas stove!
as an ex tenter I never went anywhere without electric in doing so why buy gas when you can get kettles, toasters, mini ovens, and electric rings you will never go hungry again

If you use a Utility tent do you have to pay extra? And do you need to pitch it 6m away from your tent? Looking for a new tent at the moment and would prefer a large porch for cooking, but it doesn't look like I'm going to get one, so considering a utility as well.
No you don't have to pitch it 6m away that only applies to other peoples tent. We pitch ours to the front of our tent, as your pitch on C&CC is about 26ft. On C&CC clubs you don't pay any extra, but I think on some commercial sites you pay an extra quid or two per night.
We used to cook outside but it makes such a difference being able to leave the cooker all set up instead of bringing it in and out of the tent every time. We have a kyham utitlity tent we got for abou £50 earlier this year.
We have a kitchen type thingy from Go Outdoors that you clamp the stove too, there is a table bit on it, and the combicool fits at the side on the floor. I really wouldn't be without it now, so much easier to do the cooking, especially as it's nowhere near the kids.
