i did consider just buying a piece of plastic sheeting from my local DIY store - any better suggestions?
Plastic sheeting gets very slippery when wet (if you come in with wet shoes etc be ready to go flying!)
Traditional groundsheet has one smooth side (easier to wash off - goes underneath) and one slightly textured side. Heavier then plastic sheeting, but easier to walk on (and doesn't make that crinkly sound!). You can buy it in different sizes.
Alternatively, you could use a breathable groundsheet? Two basic types available; a 'Bolon' close weave fabric one, as commonly used in caravan awnings; rot proof and quite light, or the spongy one with little holes (this is usually available by the metre and is the cheaper of the two).
I know that Yorkshire Caravans http://www.yorkshirecaravans.com/ sell pre-packaged seconds in the bolon fabric, which work out a lot less expensive than the perfect or off the roll stuff.
Hope this helps.
