Why is it most campsites are only interested in tourers these days? Obviously they can charge more but it is not nice that people with tents are often given the worst area to camp normally boggy with toilets miles away. We are fairly new to camping with our tent but finding it quite difficult to find anywhere nice to go. Any tips or good campsites for tents would be appreciated.

I have the idea that tent pitches are often further away from the amenities blocks because its easiest for the campsite owners if they can concentrate all the utilities (mains water, electricity for the shower blocks and caravan pitches etc) in one area.

On the plus side, it does mean that the tent areas should be quieter, with less people walking through. But not so good if you end up in a swamp.

'Fraid I can't help out with site suggestion sin the NE though, why not try on the CampSites board? MT

Im a tenter who travels with a small tent.

I'm in the CCC which is reastically the only club a tenter can join.Stacks of info!

The trend will be for campsites to encourage caravans, motorhomes and the like, with lots of hardstanding and serviced pitches. It represents the new type of person coming into camping.

I don't mind being the "poor relation" provided I'm paying a lot less than everybody else.Which is usually the case.

I avoid the sites that seek to charge you much the same as the rest but then put you in the "corner".

There is a lot of choice out there and vwith a bit of research you can gain an edge. And that is half the fun

One of our reasons for getting an EHU is that some sites seem to cram tents into corners, even the C&CC ones.  With a hook up you are guaranteed a proper pitch.  Sad isn't it?

Hi we are from the north east as well and generally for w eekend away go to Parkfoot campsite just outside of penrith, its on ullswater and the tent pitches are good quality, we tend to use the bottom field as it has lake access and the shower block is excellent if you stay on the main site the shower blocks are quite a distance as they are attached to the main building probably a good 5 minute walk away from some of the pitches.

We've been tent camping for over two years now, always with an EHU and have always been allocated and personally taken to, or directed to, a proper pitch by the site owner/warden, never had any problems.

I have also seen some areas of sites where tents were pitched without EHU, seems that the campers are just pointed in the general direction and left to get on with it. As a consequence this is where we hear stories of tents being pitched so close together that the guy ropes of adjoining tents cross each other.

We went to  cayton village (scarborough) last August and because we didnt want EHU for our tent, we thtought we'd be out on the big camping field at the back.  When we arrived we were shown a choice of picthes within the main park along with a number of other tents of all sizes (chose one near to kids paly area so they could go off when they wanted)

We just had similar experience, excellent facilities on this site and we took our EHU but the pitches were designed for tourers and motorhomes with a mixture of tarmac and gravel hardstanding no bigger than a car and a patch of grass next to it. The idea being that you put the caravan on the hardstanding and your awning on the patch of grass, not sure where your car was meant to go!

We were told to go and pitch and were not guided in anyway and struggled to find a spot that would accomodate our large family tent!

The camping field had no hookups and was just an absolute bog, so much so that the cars couldn't be parked on it in the end and it was very uneven and bumpy.

Campers get a raw deal again!

look for sites that don't take caravans or don't have any EHU then you won't be getting the raw deal! We've not come across this kind of discrimination on any of the sites we've stayed at, but then we don't go for large club type sites.

Oh, well, we haven't had EHU for years and we've always had a proper pitch for our tent.I think it pays to take care over which sites you book onto. MT
