i just got back from a rather cold bankholiday weekend, on friday night i hardly slept and my girlfriend didnt either so on saturday i purchased 2 nice and thick sleeping bags and what a difference they made, i was lovly and toasty warm and on sunday i hade no complaints from my girlfriend so that was £30 well spent,
Me and my girlfriend pitched up at Turner Hall for the bank holiday weekend and when it came to going to sleep i got in my sleeping bag (borrowed of parents) only to find a great big hole in the bottom big enough for both my feet to stick out! Needless to say I hardly slept a wink that night because I was sooo cold. The following night I managed to 'plug' the bottom with a fleece I had, which proved to keep the heat in a little better But, we are planning to go back again this weekend, but I want to go prepared this time We are looking to buy a king-size double sleeping bag for us both to go in (keep warmer that way) and was wondering if anybody could suggest a good one?
We bought a king size double sleeping bag when we first started camping but apart from the obvious plus of being able to cuddle up e.t.c. in the same bag we soon found it had its drawbacks .Every time one of us needed to get up in the night the other would be woken too as you tried to find the zip which was never anywhere other than underneath either your own or OH's body.OH would always complain that I was hogging most of the covers ( as if !!!) and there was always a draughty tunnel between us in the middle of the night! On warmer nights OH would get really hot and try to throw the covers off whilst I froze! This year we have opted for two separate really snuggly Vango bags which, incidently can zip together ( if necessary).I am looking forward to a really good nights sleep.
------------- Time is never wasted when you're wasted all the time.
We have 2 Wynnster trail explorer bags which we can zip together if we want. They're great, really warm & comfy with loads of room & a flanelette lining. They're around £25 each & we got them from Camperlands at Manchester. http://www.wynnsteroutdoorleisure.com/trailexplorer.htm
When it's cold I also put a rug & insulating mats underneath our Coleman Double Comfort airbed, & a fleece blanket between the bed & the sleeping bags. At Easter I also took a spare sleeping bag to wrap around us whilst we were sat watching our DVDs at night. This could have been put over our bags as an extra layer if it had snowed! I also wore fleece PJs & a fleece hat. We were snug as bugs but you might be a little bit warm if you tried all that at this time of year - the bags should be enough!!!!!
OK well thanks for all the feedback so soon (and the welcome camperjan). It is good to hear your experiences calpyline, with the double sleeping bag, as it stops me from making the same mistake lol. I think a better option for us would be to get a couple of good single ones that zip together, like both you and CamperJan mentioned. Also, how would i go about finding a good camping shop near me? Manchester is only about 30-40 mins from me, but was just wondering if there would be any a bit closer for me to go look in? If you can help, once again many thanks. ;)
Welcome to the best site around mofofunk . Try Go outdoors new superstore at stockport near the blue pyramid if you know where that is .
We always opt for seperate sleeping bags with a fleece liner for really cold nights.Try and put another layer on top of your sleeping mats either a fleece blanket or we use a wooly/fleecy stretch to fit mattress topper also we put foam roll matts under our mattress for extra insulation and lastly fleece hats are great if really cold.Hope this helps .

------------- Andy.... No such thing as bad weather...just the wrong clothes !!!
Our experience of sleeping bags are pretty similar. We had a double bag but found the moving about thing and the cold spots in the bag were too much to have a good night sleep.
We now sleep on: couple of roll mats on the groundsheet, blow up double bed, completely opened single bag, two single vango nitestar350 bags mummy style ( then my wife puts a blanket over the top of herself) Thats plenty warm for even the coldest nights.
Nearest camping outlet to Preston is at Fleetwood but I've forgotten the name even though I was in there last week...Doubtless there'll be someone along in a minute with the name, address, postcode and telephone number.
I think this is the one....
