Hi,

I'd like advice on a slight problem I'm having with my tent ('Pro-Action' (Argos) 4 man tent, side entrance with two bedrooms at opposite ends) as a result of what I believe to be quite poor design.

The side entrance has elastic toggle and loop for rolling up the door.  When it rains, the bit on the outside gets soaked then capillarised through to the inside and then (when saturated) will drip into the central storage area.

My ideas are to either use waterproof spray and completely cover the exposed elastic or just use some sealant tape and cover the elastic (but doing this will mean they cannot be used for their intended purpose).

Has anyone ever had a similar problem or offer any advice. Other than this - the tent itself is OK (for my occasional use anyway).

Thanks

Have you tried using Seam Seal as it is made for this type of thing? Avalible at any camping shop.

Dab of seam sealent on the inside should sort it out. It`s a common problem....90% of all leaks are at toggle and elastic points.

your not going to stop wicking from the inside, best put some seam sealent on the stitching on the ourside and rub it into the holes just needs a small bit, if you over do it you end up with a mess on the outside

Put it on both sides then, but don`t use much. It`s only to fill up the stitching holes after all. And let it dry for 24 hours after you seal it otherwise it will stick to itself.

Welcome pm_french to UKCS. Just noticed it's you first post. Not going to offer any advice as the others have already done that. Just wanted to welcome you.

Hope your problem will soon be sorted.

hello pm_french.  Our Vango did exactly the same, a good spray of waterproofer on the inside and outside did the trick for us

We had this problem with toggle points on our Khyam Conquest, so I put the tent up in dry weather, treated the affected dangly bits with seam sealant applied with a little brush,  and gave it 36 hours to dry (its a very gluey, tacky substance) with tent pegs weighing the loops down whilst it dried, in order to stop then sticking to the flysheet.

Thanks for the advice I'll get busy at the weekend (and cheers Angie and John for the warm welcome - I've used the site for a while but more for locating sites rather than using the forums).

Its interesting that some of (what I believed to be) the better manufacturers (Vango for instance) have similar issues.  I put this down mainly to it being a cheaper brand.

Nope, it happens to all and every brand of tent at some point or another. It`s just one of these things...the more toggle and other points you add to a seam, the more weak points. Sure, better manufacturers make a better job of sealling the seams overall, but they still don`t manage 100%.
