Yep it seems odd that they give that advice. Cotton canvas needs to be watered so that it swells to fill the stitch holes, but the Monty is a synthetic tent and is proofed and seam sealed already, so whilst it is a good idea to get out any new tent and check it over if possible before you actually go camping I can see no need to water it down.
Then one time I DID do this was with a cheap Khyam I got on line which I wanted to check for waterproofness, as there was a dodgy batch out in 2003/4. Turned out have been a good idea on that occasion cos the b*gger did leak!
