We do that as well. The tarp not only keeps the 'real' groundsheet clean but also gives you a clean area to pitch your tent so the flysheet keeps clean. Then just tuck the excess back under / in and you won't have any probs with water diverting into your tent via the tarp.
Why use a tarp to keep the groundsheet clean? The B&Q tarps are a bit shiny, so easy to clean off, very cheap and light. No transporting heavy and filthy vinyl groundsheets then.
By the way, if you use your breathable groundsheet (as per original question) you won't need to use a tarp, and you will still stay dry.
