Hello

I'm new to this board so apologies if this question has been asked (many) times before.

We are about to dip our family toes into the world of camping and wondered if anyone had any recommendations on tents for a tallish family of 4. Our children are young (3 and 6) so don't need huge amounts of space, but I'm 5'11" and my other half is 6'5". Any advice on good starter tents with a bit more headroom would be very gratefully received.

Thanks
Leah

(I'm assuming that as with all things, we get what we pay for...)

You really need to go to your local outdoor world type places and try before you buy.  Also worth a trip in the rain as this gives you an ideal of how the water will come in and how the tent feels when your all stuck in it.  We have two five men tents for two adults and two dogs with standing room but then we ike to spread out - good luck and have fun

Hello Leah,

New to all this ourselves.

Similar to you I'm 6'2 and wife is 5'10 and 4 year old daughter

We just bought a Gelert Lokon Vario 4 tunnel tent , 2 bedrooms and large living space and being that it is a tunnel headroom is consistent throughout the tent.

Came in at around £180

There may be more suitable tents for you , I'm sure someome else will be around in a mo with a recommendation.

Regards Ian

Have to agree with Heid, a Vario tunnel tent for the most usable headroom. Most manufactures do their own version of it these days. Ours is a Sunn Camp Vario 6.

Hi Leah

I would have to agree with 100acrewood and say go and have a look at some up to get a feel for the space there is inside. If you let us know what area you live in, someone will be able to recommend a good camping shop with tents on display in your area.

Whereabouts are you Connor?  Someone will be able to suggest a shop or show you can visit to look at some tents before you buy one.

Aha, yes I see my newness to message boards extends to not putting all the right information in my profile! We're in Wandsworth, SW London.

A bit if a trek out of London, but SK Camping in South Godstone, Surrey on the A22 has a good display (and prices as good as any internet -  if you end up buying there).

Someone may have an idea of somewhere closer.  Happy chosing!

PS we were very pleased we bought at a shop and not online in the end (as we had a problem that resulted in a very quick exchange)

not really a starter tent, but definitely worth it is the Vango Vista 800DLX.  I'm 5'11" too, and OH is 6'3" so headroom was important for us.  We've also got 2 small kids, so the extra space is brilliant for storing pushchairs, travel cots, general rubbish...

Hi Connor, welcome to ukcs,

This one is a good starter for £99. I had one a couple of years ago,I paid £150 and was very happy with it in all weathers. good head height, loads of room, and it goes up in 20 - 30mins after a few practices.

united british caravans have a special offer tent section, with previous years model tents at about half price, well worth a look. They have the sunncamp vario for £135 and the magnum and columbia for £130.

Hi Leah,

We're new to this camping lark too... As others have said try get out to camping stores and have a good look around tent, sit in them for a while... do you feel comfy enough to spend the day in one if the weathers really bad...

We did this, and in doing so, set some preferences for what we wanted... we wanted sewn in groundsheet (stop creepy crawlies), lots of living space (2 kids) and two bedrooms.... we picked Montana 6.......... and love it (pic's in my gallery)

http://www.outwell.com have some video clips of the tents being erected, you might find this useful.

Happy shopping

Lots of living space in case it rains and I wanted a sleeping area that we were all together.  My youngest was 2 at the time and I didn't want her sleeping the other side of the tent.

I wish I was, I've told enough people about them. But just last nightI have  persuaded hubby that we really need to get a new tent, after having towcar problems which nearly stopped our last weekend away in the caravan. I have always preferred tents but hubby's not keen , and the 12 man one we have is too big for weekends for 3 of us. So guess where I'll be getting one from, but the only thing is I can't make up my mind which one I want, they're all such bargains,  and I do love a bargain
