I have a large 60cm tear in the flysheet of my large Campus tent.  I have sent it off to be repaired, but I am worried that the whole tent may now be getting brittle.

It is about 5 years old.  The camping shop suggested that, after the repair, I should reproof the whole tent, and this would protect the fabric and make it less brittle.

Any views?  I'd like to make it lasta year or two more if poss!

Synthetic tents should last for seven to eioght years of "regular" use, whatever regular means. If you`ve been using it for extended periods in very sunny climates, this shortens the lifespan considerably as the UV in the sunlight is the problem.

if I`d been using a tent a lot for five years then put a two foot tear in it I`d probably replace it, sorry. Repairs are expensive. Also reproofing is really only for cotton canvas tents. Synthetic tents have water resistant layers bonded onto the inside of the flysheet.

I'd take their advise.   Better to reproof, especially after you've paid for a repair.

it all depends on the cost of the repair and the seasons that you camp but i would say if you are not in  a position to replace then repair and camp (on a good weekend first)to test it out, also depending on where the tear is it may not hold if it is on a stress point so ensure that the repair is garenteed(sorry cant spull or tork the queens england) hope it works ...happy trails

Hi & welcome to the forum Bangyuk

When you get the tent back, pitch it in the garden on a wet day & see whether there are any leaks. Must admit that I've never heard of waterproofing synthetic tents, only canvas frame tents.
