The things I learnt from youth group camping:

Reading a map properly - no satnav for me

Cooking for 30 on a camp fire, with Uncle Bens rice for rice pudding!

Chasing foxes in a transit van

Not getting phased by leaking tents, tents getting blown away or atmospheric latrine tents

How to make love in the back seat of a Mark II Ford Cortina

Cross country navigation to the nearest pub

And just having fun in a field - rain or shine.

But I guess most of these weren't really scouting skills, I never whittled!

Eric

A problem is just an answer with the wrong question.

Yes great times in the scouts doing night hikes was the greatest you would set off and the oldest looking one would go into the pub and get the beers in. Thats where i first met the bear (Hofmeister)

Yes im always inventing things for the kids someone only has to say they could do with something and i will go and make it if possible

My son was a cub and a scout and went away camping at least once a month so Im hoping when we go away in our new tent, hes the one whos going to be able to put it up!

My son is 13 and when OH bought our first family tent, which was a second hand frame tent, we had to wait for our son to get in from school to show us how to put it up! Result? After following his orders we had it up in no time.

We recently got a Nebraska XXL and with son`s help we had it up within no time. I won`t go camping without him.....bless.

My stepfather showed me how to make crude bread in an emergency. Just mix flour and water into a basic dough, wrap it around a stick and hold it over an open fire. It wasn't award winning bread but it filled a hole.

I'm pretty sure they used to call those 'dampers'... We used to whack a lump of the gooey mix onto hot stones beside the campfire, until it sort of 'looked' cooked!... It was amazing the cr*p we happily ate, just because it had been cooked by campfire!... We survived though and can't remember any of us being the 'fussy eaters' that many kids seem to be nowadays...

As a scout leader myself, can I just make one small suggestion to parents who say there are waiting lists.

Help

If only 2 or 3 parents out of the 30 or so scouts(50-60 parents in total) became leaders another evening could be setup for meetings.

*blushes* guilty I know.

I do intend to start helping out, as soon as I manage to clear a few other things off the calendar. Only so many hours in the day unfortunately.

The leaders that there are do a fantastic job I know.
