Shirley i'm sure this has been mentioned on another thread ..but as i recall the flaps go OUT so the rain runs away from the groundsheet/tent...i do of course stand to be corrected as so often happens to me.
If it's the Sunncamp Vario then the flaps go inwards, under the groundsheet, cos the pegging points are on the outside. It's a devil of a job to keep them under the groundsheet though if it's breezy.
yes, it depends on where the pegging points are. The flaps can only go to the side that you don`t have the pegging loops.
Most flaps go inwards...this is the traditional way so that rain runs straight down the flysheet then off the bottom rather than ending up wetting the edge of the canvas. I`ve yet to hear a satisfactory explaination as to why it`s better to let parts of your tent lie out in muddy puddles. Also if your flaps are out how do you keep the draughts out if you can`t tuck them under the edge of the groundsheet? Weird...
Well - I emailed Gelert thinking I would get a definitive answer...
" - the mud flap/valance. Does it tuck underneath or should it be pegged outside? Opinions vary and everyone has there own way of doing things obviously, but it would be good to know which way they are designed to go."
The reply....
"Hi
That old question again. As you say opinions vary and there isn’t a right and wrong way, sometimes it depends on how the ground lies, I go for outside myself."
So even Gelert don't know!
I have a Lokon Vario 5, and the flaps are split at the poles, and have tabs for pegging on the outside, which would suggest pegging in... but what about the groundsheet pegs?
If you tuck them under your groundsheet, then surely you can't peg down your groundsheet, or it will make holes in your mud flaps?
To be honest, I thought the little loops on the outside were just for hitching it up with the toggles, to let in ventilation in hot weather. Last weekend I didn't peg them at all....but then it was dry.
So do the sides of your tent reach the ground, and you just tuck the flaps flat under your groundsheet? What about the groundsheet pegs?
Sorry to ask so many questions but I am curious...
We had a Sunncamp Vario 5, but couldn't get to grips with the mud flap and groundsheet. When it rained the water came in and we held mudflap down with bottles of water to stop the wind lifting it up. Water also got in through both the roof lights. This year we pegged the groundsheet down through the mudflap, but still had water in tent.
We're getting a new tent for next year with either SIG or ZIG and no roof lights.
to keep out the draughts and rain we always peg out flaps outside. There are handy little tabs on the corners of the flaps and with these pegged the tent 'hugs' the ground keeping out all draughts
