Me too.  Our last tent we had for 5 years and I've used fly spray in it several times - we never had problems with leaks, & that Lichfield dome survived many a rain battering I can tell you!

I must say I prefer not to use it unless I really have to as it stinks out the tent, and I don't particularly like the smell - especially when combined the the SSS Dry Oil Spray that we are all wearing to stop ourselved getting bitten!

We contacted Outwell about this last year. They told us that aerosols are a no-no, but that plug in ones that take tablets are fine. Still had some bugs, but no mossies which was what we wanted.

Is there a difference between canvas and synthetic though, both for aerosols and detergent?  I thought the waterproof coating was bonded to synthetic fabric?  If thats right then should these things make a difference?

My tent instructions say " The Tent fabric can be wiped clean using household detergent. Do not bleach or use harsh chemicals."

So I reckon you are right on the detergent front but fly spray may be "harsh chemicals".

How about using one of those Clearlite lamps?

hi

i spray a cloth with deet or similar and hang the cloth  from a loop in tent so its not touching . .(maybe one of the hanging fly killers  would work )

I don't like fly spray as it makes me cough

apperently if you burn citronelle candles OUT SIDE  the insect can still smell them when they have gone out so just leaving them in the tent might work.

I wouldn't use anything that might effect the tent fabric

Hi, on Outwells website under tips and maintenence for tents they state "Insecticides must not be sprayed in or on the tent." However I have just come back from France and my tent was full of flying bugs I have been using fly spray (sparingly). Whilst I was there I invested in the zapper which has been mentioned - they are great (just dont touch it - ouch!). Also used a fly paper type thing by Raid it comes in a pack of 2 (looks like a do not disurb door hanger you find in hotels) its double sided with this sticky stuff and those flies die instantly! Strangly has a mutli coloured design on it but was great aorund the tent and cheap too!

Those bugs didnt stand a chance with me!!

I think I'm going to need something.  Our new tent seemed to attract half the insect population of Windermere at the weekend - could it be the colour?  I've used flyspray where necessary for years, but I don't want to be using it all the time.

All the best,

we don't use fly spray as they are just part of camping, don't see why they should die when we invade their environment.

I do use deodrant though but only in bedroom pod as I figure it won't hurt that fabric

I'm by no means an expert as I haven't used an aerosol in 30 years, but I wouldn't want to use one in an enclosed space any smaller than the Albert Hall. Just the thought of breathing it in makes me feel sick, before we even get started on the environment. I can't recall having a tent full of flying beasties either.

We do used citronelle candles outside the tent though

Liz
