Hi,

Does anyone have one of these tents? It's on our short list as its' got the 3 bedrooms we want, plus loads of living space.

Can anyone tell me if it is a bit dark inside with only the windows on the porches? Also at 750cm x 650cm is it too big for some sites or is this the norm these days?

Many thanks

The tent is massive, have not camped yet but had to pay for a pitch at a site to put it up because of it's size. My husband says it's like the millenium Dome, u can park the car in it. We have a site in Newquay booked at no extra cost, as long as they know beforehand the size they will make sure they have a big enough pitch. Don't know about the light from the windows as he put it straight up and then took it straight down, just to make sure everything was there.

Can't wait to try it out.

I've got one, fantastic tent, really light and airy. I've got the 2005 version and have used it about half a dozen times so far this year. I went from a Wynnster buzzard 4 to my marvelous mercury 9 excel. When I first put it up I wondered if it was going to be too big. But having used it I have found it to be wonderful. I've not had any problems with the size of it and have seen plenty of other tents that take up more space because of the way they are set out. The mesh panels on the doors have been fantastic.

Podling

Can you confirm there are full mesh doors on the porches, both sides?

Thanks, Steve

Hi there, not sure if you have brought your tent yet, but just to say that we have a Mercury 9 Excel and it is brill. We bought ours last year at the end of the season and used if over the bank hols.  It was fairly easy to put up, thanks to tips from other campers on this site.  We put it up again last weekend and it was easier! It is making its first trip to France in a couple of weeks and have been told that it is fine - size wise.  The mesh on both ends do make it airy and if like us we have an additional annexe tent for kitchen stuff it does make the space inside enourmous.  Have fun.

I love my Mercury Excel 9, so much space, friends have already nicknamed it 'The Village Hall' they were planning us to have a big party in it when we were all away the other week. We did not find it dark, infact quite the opposite. I was a little worried that it would be quite dark inside but the light colour included on the flysheet makes sure this isn't the case. I like having the flexibility with the sleeping pods, having dogs and their cages (regular camping at dog shows etc) means the space is invaluable and when we haave the need, we can still have the large and just one small pod up and utilise the remaining space. We found it very easy to put up and it managed to withsatnd a couple of horrendous storms and 3 mini whirlwinds! The only problem we encountered was a bit of pooling of water above the porch areas but I don't think this was helped by the slight tilt we were on and was easily solved with the help of the porch poles!

I've been amazed by the amount of space in our Mercury 9 Excel. I did experience some pooling of water near the front door, but to be fair I'd never seen that amount of rain come down in such a small amount of time before. I pushed up the middle section and that sorted it out. It definetly is a really bright/light tent and once the front and back doors are open it cools down really quickly. The kids love having seperate pods and I've found it great to be able to have the main pod sectioned off so that my hubby and I sleep in two thirds and we use the other third for storage when needed. It certainly is easy to put up. We got our tent at the beginning of the year and have used it about 5 times so far, gonna be using it again next weekend (all being well).
Has anybody got the 2006 version of this tent, if so how light is that?

I bought the Mercury 9 Excel, 2006 version, last week.  Fantastic!

Used it for 3 nights at Croyde, N Devon, including one night of heavy rain.  No problems (except we only had the mesh door closed, so the rain came in on the groundsheet)!

Relatively easy to put up (and will be easier next time - having learnt one or two things).  V quick to take down, having pointed a dark cloud and the imminent possibility of heavy rain out to the family!  Also managed to get it all back in the bag, helped by the storage strap for the main tent, and the compression straps on the bag.

Some extras not mentioned in the bumph: loads of storage pockets in the inners, plus a few in the living area (several makers use these as a strong selling point, Wynnster doesn't even mention them), spare poles etc.

No problem with light inside.  We didn't take the covers off the windows - I thought the plastic windows would only add to the heat inside - but still light enough.  The mesh doors help to keep it cool, especially if there is a little breeze.

Inners are not full height (for me, 6'2") - they are probably about 170cm. Living space is cavernous and plenty high enough.

Pleased I made the decision.  Recommend anyone to go for it.  Enjoy.

Another happy Excel owner. I always forget to mention the storage pouches in the living compartment and yet us them every time we go away.   The storage pouches in the pods are good, but can only take lightweight things otherwise they'd droop. :) I've opened the curtains many a time on ours. I did find that if they were open and the sun was particularly strong then it did get extra warm on the groundsheet where the sun shone.

As I think I said before, like you I found the mesh doors to be brilliant, especially when it's a warm evening and there are lots of bugs about, it minimises the amount of bugs that can come in but provides a lovely breeze through the tent.
I was most surprised by how big the living area is. Ample space.
