You should enjoy being in the the Mendips. We live in a place called Shepton Mallet; about 12 to 15 miles from Cheddar. This is a lovely part of the world.
If you get time, try and drive out to Ebbor Gorge. Lovely walk through woods and then a (not too strenuous) climb up Ebbor Gorge. Fab views from the top. Cathedral City of Wells (smallest city in England) is worth a visit. Cathedral is lovely and their cloisters restaurant very good (particulalrly the cakes!).
Then there's Glastonbury, home of the airheads (sorry to be disparaging) with Glastonbury Tor (well worth the walk to the top) and Glastonbury Abbey (now a ruin but alleged that King Arthur is buried there).
And for your shopping, Clarks Village. An outlet village where you can get some good bargains (there's a Tog 24, Trespass and Mountain Warehouse shop).
