Hi all!

Apologies for not being around recently! I'd been planning my first camping trip!

Went to new Forest (St Leonards Farm Camp Site) and had a fab time. Took granny with us, and we were there 4 days/3 nights.

Put tent up on my own and we thought we had everything. Mum had bought a cooker but it said no regulater included, so she walked and walked and drove and drove and after 3 hours (she was desperate for a cup of tea otherwise I'd have left it!!!) she bought one. On opening the cooker, what did we find............a regulater!!!

I swapped my electric hook up for a picnic table, lamps and batteries and was glad of it. I think a hook up will be good in colder  months but not essential in Summer.

We got caught in the freak storm that hit Bournemouth, but tent withheld it all (friends caravan got flooded!)

All in all it was a great weekend and I'm ready to do it again!

Only advice needed is:

  • how to get tent back in bag (have had to leave an inner tent out)
  • is a disposable BBQ just as good as a cooker (if you're not too worried about tea/coffee)
  • how long should tent be left in bag before it should need to be taken out to air

Thanks guys for all the invaluable advice over the months that has made y frst trip fantastic!

Well done and congrats!  You can now plan all the rest of your camping trips with ease and you learn by your mistakes of what things you need and what things you can ditch.  Happy camping!

    * how to get tent back in bag (have had to leave an inner tent out)
    * is a disposable BBQ just as good as a cooker (if you're not too worried about tea/coffee)
    * how long should tent be left in bag before it should need to be taken out to air

First one is trial and error - you need to get as much air out of the tent as possible. Try rolling it to get rid of the air then unroll and fold to the right size.

Second one - we use a disposable BBQ to cook evening meals on but need the gas stove for the kettle

Thirdly - if your tent was dry when you packed it away then you shouldnt need to air it at all

Hope that helps.

Try using vaseline, or rubbing a soft pencill ( i reccomend a 3b) over it. It will go in the bag a treat.

we use a camping stove and have a portable gas bbq, they don't take up much room and with gas it is quicker too.

We have just been camping in the New Forest in our new tent. We have only done a little festival before. It was lovely.

re disposable bar-be-cues.. they often smell horrible and taint the food.

It is worth getting some local charcoal...we got ours at Streets in Brockenhurst...  which doesn't have any petrol added so smells lovely.

the barbecue in the pictures was donated by some people who were leaving as we arrived so that was very handy

We packed our 'inner' into a seperate bag which kept it cleaner. The tent was a bit muddy.

we will go camping again but probably without the horses.

Chinagirl, I don't think zaccy means rub vaseline or pencil over the whole tent! (just the zip on the bag I think?

I too was a bit alarmed when I first read it.

i have often heard of, but never tried, rubbing pencil lead onto zips. I was already thinking of trying it on my tent 'doors'. I'll get a 3b.
