it has been a bit on the thunder and lightening side just lately as I am sure most of the country are aware!!   Going camping on Monday and was just wondering - how safe are you in a tent during a thunderstorm?  If it is overhead, would it be better to de-camp  into the car?!

Looking forward to replies........and thunderstorm stories!!!

well last weekend we endured our first storm camping. at our site 4 tents got flatlined, a further 7 leaked like a sive and we where warm and dry in our tennt even though the wind occasionally shook it. after the storm passed up went our B-B-Q and camping bussiness for us was back to usual. do you have faith in your tent ?

Ellie, you have my sympathy! We're going camping on Monday too and I've just checked the forecast today.... It's going p!$$ down all day monday - great! 

It wont put me off as when we went away at Easter, it was forecast lovely weather and it rained for 3 days solid!!

Take your earplugs ...... and a good book and ignore the storm ...

our tents has been great in a monstrous storm ...well anchored by those famous ground anchors!

We suffered our second thunder storm on Saturday, just when we were packing up to come home

We'd already packed most of the equipment in the trailer & car boot when the storm hit, so I grabbed a chair for hubby, the cooker, kettle, cups & coffee, and we sat out the storm in the empty tent, drinking coffee & watching the lightening. It was lovely, unlike the storm we crawled through at 30mph on the M1 on the way home  

At last I can contribute to a thinderstorm thread :-)

We had a storm on the IOW the first night we were there. I had read all the thunderstorm threads and was contimplating dragging the kids in to the car but in the end I decided to let them sleep and sat out the storm in the porch with a couple of glasses of wine.

Thank goodness I invested in delta pegs as the tent was as solid as a rock :-)

My tent has metal poles and I made sure me and the kids were off the floor. I sat in the porch waiting to see if my skin pricked so you were heeded :-)
