Im sure someone will have some recommendations in a while but all I can suggest to start with is to visit your local camping shops and have a look at all tents. See if any styles take your fancy and then have a look online. You may find a tent at a good price that way. Also dont rule out 2nd hand tents there are some even better bargains to be had that way. Also someone just posted a link to a tent price comparison site.

Hi & welcome

I agree with itsmekids.  One thingh though, you will need more than 5 berth - those sardine pictures the manufcturers use are misleading.

An example of  a tent with resaonable space look at this      or this

But seeing a tent in the flesh is the best bet.

think about where you will sleep and the kids,

do you want to be able to stand up in the tent?

I would go for 6 berth and something you can stand in, that has a good loving space

have a walk around a camping shop that has tent up, have a poke about inside, see what room you have when you are all inside it

(Thankfully I have this now saved this list in my Outlook notes - probably missed a make, so shout if I have).

Commonly available (UK) tents, with established reputations are:

  • Cabanon
  • Easycamp
  • Coleman
  • Gelert
  • Kyham/Campus
  • Outwell
  • Relum
  • Sunncamp
  • Vango
  • Wynnster

Less common and specialist brands, but still with established reputations:

  • Aztec
  • Basecamp
  • Eureka
  • Force Ten
  • Heidelberg
  • Jack Wolfskin
  • Jamet
  • Karsten
  • Lichfield
  • Blue Diamond/Outdoor Revolution
  • Messager
  • Marechal
  • Quechua
  • Quest
  • Robens
  • Royal
  • Vaude
  • Wild Country

Then there are some established shop brands, including:

  • Blacks (Blacks)
  • Eurohike (Millets)
  • Peakland (Yeomans)
  • ProAction (Argos)

.. and then finally there are the famed too-good-to-be true, direct from China Ebay "specials", which are to be avoid like an unexploaded bomb in a fireworks factory.

First thing is that no tents are really like they are in the pictures - so it is a must to actually go and see some errected (and packed - see how much space they eat in the car). Have a look at some decent and trusted makes, the features you like etc. and then post what you found. The folk on here can then recommend other makes to put on a short list to go bargain hunting.

One of the first things to think about will be the bedroom set up - do you want the five of you in all one bedroom, in seporate ones, in seporate ones but next to each other? How much privacy do you want?

Is this primarly for weekends or weeks away? rarely does one tent do both well.

Some to consider, within your budget: Gelert Alaska, Quebec & Lokon, Vango Oregon, Coleman Canyon.

Finally, there are some bargain 2005 models (new tents) still around which you may want to look at with your budget in mind - you would get more tent for your money. Awnings Direct have some on sale on their site - Sunncamp Vario and Tourist which you might want to consider.

Also have a look at the S/H section of this site.

Now is certainly a good time to buy, as the end of the season draws to a close a lot of tents get sold off.

Hi BB, I have just bought a new tent off e-bay and it is not a chinese one, a tunnel tent, made and shipped from Germany. It is excellent quality and extremely easy to erect. Dont tar all sellers with same brush.
