I took my grandchildren  (5+7) on their first camping trip  on Sunday  for a week in Mablethorpe what a disaster  it turned out to be , Sunday was  hot and sunny  and we were on the beach  for most of the day  ... lovely  then  from sunday night onwards  we had  torrential rain  and  wind all day and all night  non stop ,  the girls thought it was  great fun watching the rain pour from the roof of the tent and down the windows  needless to say  we have packed up  this afternoon and come home  What a  disaster !  On the bright side  the tent stood up  well to it  we were as dry as a bone inside (its a  nevada 5 from argos )    we're hoping to go again in September  IF the weather is better

wot a shame i recall reading how much you all looked forward to this trip.

chin up you shouldnt let the weather put you off though like you said the inside of the tent was dry and cosy and warm. it didnt bother the kids so dont worry about it the thing is if you only go camping in the sun then you would probably never go

good luck for next time

Hope you get better weather next time. We went to Mablethorpe a couple of years ago for 2 weeks we stayed on the C & CC site. It was lovely for 1 week then pretty much like you said thhe heavens opened and winds got up for the second. We battled it out and stayed. The tent stayed up to it well (a Vango tunnel at the time). Thats the only problem with camping in this country it does tend to rain a lot even in the summer. Were going soon on our hols and no doubt it will rain then too. I know its not easy with bad weather and kids it does seem to get more costly when its raining.

.......... the tent was  just about big enough for the three of us , with  two double airbeds in the bedroom  1 for the girls and 1 for me   there was about  6 inches in between them ,  had the weather been  better  i know we would have had a great time .  We were on C&CC   site  I got a  nice surprise as we booked out  the warden said the money for the nights we werent using would go into a holding account ,  which i didnt excpect to happen  I thought  i would have lost the money so  that will pay  for our next trip   although i would have been prepared to lose it  just to get the  girls home and out of the wind and rain

Did you get to have a go on the Crazy Golf near the dunes Theatre, it has been mentioned in a book (Tilting at windmills) where they said it was the best Crazy Golf in the country and in a well known golfing mag. oh and my MIL owns it !!! so I am slightly biased.

I'm sorry your trip was cut short

Children don't seem to mind the rain that much on the whole though so they probably weren't too put off.

I tend to dress us all up in our waterproofs and go out regardless of the weather - the youngest has an all in one outfit (she looks like a drunken mini Michael Schumacher as it's all red). Then the rest of us have waterproof jackets (Gortex for the adults) and waterproof trousers, then hot showers all round when we get back and meals in pubs.

Once I managed to lock the keys in the car where our towels were drying just as we'd had a particularly cold wet day walking up Snowdon - I was desperate for the shower. The camp warden was scarily helpful at breaking into our car - he was an expert.
