We are going camping in a couple of weeks, but since booking up we have got a puppy .
Having never camped with a dog can anyone give us advice on camping with a dog or puppy, especially what to do at night and coping with house training in a tent.
we have camped with our pooches, they are a bit older, but they bedded down fine in the main living area at night, and when not on walkies, kept under control on a longish lead and ground spike..water always down.
As for a pup - lots of paper, my only real concern for you would be the predicted heat of one of the hottests August, a tent, or outside not in the shade may prove a bit of a task for pup..!
hiya we have always taken our dog with us from being 6 months old we have never encountered any problems with him he always slepted in his basket in the same bedroom as us and like the previous post during the day plenty of walks and secured down with a dog spike. the only time we had a problem was when he heard someone walking about at night and managed to get out of the bedroom as we had left the bedroom door open a little to see the kids and then he escaped under the tent and chased him up the camp site luckiley he came back without any damage to the mans bum
We took our puppy camping for the first time when she was 12 weeks old but it was only for a weekend. We'd cage trained her so on a night she went in her cage, during the day she came with us but we had to carry her everywhere cause she'd only just had her 2nd lot of injections so for toileting we got another groundsheet and put this outside one of the doors and put a windbreak round it. She did her business on that, she also had a couple of accidents in the tent which we cleaned up with kitchen roll and cif wipes. If it's gonna be hot while you are away I wouldn't leaving the puppy in the tent as they do get very hot inside like a car we try and go places where we know we can take our dog. Hope you and your puppy have a great holiday

I have camped with my cocker spaniel for 4 years, since he was 5 months old, and have had no problems. He has his own bed, kept purely for camping, and sleeps in the inner tent with me. I keep him attached to a ground stake by means of a long lead, so if he did go walkabouts during the night he could not get far. He loves camping and knows where he is going when he sees me pack his bed. We live in a small village without a pub, so when we go away he tries to drag me into every pub we walk past. At night he insists that I take him to the pub and drink that evil nectar, but I only do it to keep him happy, honest.
You could use Puppy training pads for your pup to toilet on, these are available from www.dogmobility.com
You may find that with the heat your pup may become a little fussy with it's food, make sure that he has access to plenty of fresh water. If you are out for the day remember to carry a water bowl with you and the large 4 pint milk cartons are great for carrying the water. Remember that not all tourist attractions allow dogs in so check before you go. We visit Tenby in West wales quite often and Herons Brook is one of the few places that will let your dog in - and it is a fab place for the kids.
One other thing, if you have a pup, remember that they tire easily and do not over walk him.
We went camping with our dog for the first time this year and he loves it. We put him in his cage at night to sleep and keep him tied up with us in the day or take him out with us when we go out. (we have one of these dog stakes that screws into ground). I would suggest you use a cage for your puppy if you dont already because I dont know many puppies that have accidents in these things. Its where they sleep and they dont like mess where they sleep. At least that would help in the night. Im sure he will enjoy it and you will too.
Crate training is is the best option, not only for camping but also at home. your puppy will soon learn to love his crate, We have two labs and a x lab puppy, all are crate trained, they will not mess in the crate either as they see it as their bed.
On colder nights we put a blanket over the top of the crate to keep the drafts out, this also works if you fancy a lay in in the morning!!!!
good luck, im sure you and your new pup will have a great time camping, our dogs love it, as soon as the camping gear comes out they get really excited, running round barking.
We took Izzy camping and she was a star - on the 1st night we took the risk of putting her in the bedroom with us (with some paper in the corner !!) and she was dry all night . After that we did the same every night with the same result - one night she needed to go and woke me up by licking me to let her out.
The only accidents were later in the week when she wet in the main part of the tent but I can forgive that as it was during a thunderstorm - I think I would have wee'd the tent rather than go out in the storm !!.
True to form though - as soon as we arrived home normal service was resumed - back to papers down and clearing up afterwards !!!
One thing to mention to any dog owners - go to Cheddar, it has to be the most dog friendly town in the UK. You can take the dog into most of the attractions in the town including the caves etc.. It seemed to be only the food establishments that did not admit dogs (obviously) but even these had bowls of water outside for the dogs to drink.
