Sorry for all the questions all of a sudden but we need to make a decision and stop faffing about! (well ok I need to stop faffing about, my DH has decided!!).

This is more out of interest than anything else but is it harder to find a pitch if you have a larger tent? I suppose what really mean is, does it cut down the choice of campsites available?

We just like to like to have as much choice as possible although we prefer quieter sites.

Thanks again.

Having a larger tent does slightly cut down the number of sites you can use or you can do what the warden at Ninham suggested to me and book 2 pitches. However I have found that the best sites I have been to have had 'free' camping and there size does not matter.

I love my big tent and enjoy the fact that I do not have to worry about rain as we can happily live in our tent but am going to buy a weekend tent for one or two night trips.

Yes it will cut down your choice and your chances of getting a pitch if the sites are already busy, you may also end up adding to the cost of your camping.

It sounds like you've been looking already and I'm sure you're aware that some configuration of tents take up much more room than others - so the Vango Diablo will require a bigger pitch than say an Outwell Montana because the Diablo has a "Y" shape to it and the Montana has a more compact footprint.   It's not all about the berth size of the tent, look at the footprint of it and remember that you need to allow for your guy ropes (usually up to a metre in each direction) and also your car.

Which tents are you looking at?

I had a diablo 600 and found it a devil to pitch in a regular sized pitch.

There is a thread pinned at the top of the UK campsites section called sites accepting large tents so you may find some useful info there.

The info I got from one site (where we had to pay extra for our nebraska - which we've just sold 2nd hand for £335 :o) ) was that standard pitches take a tent up to about 6m x 4m which allows for your car and guy ropes. I think it's linked to the size of caravans.  We're thinking of buying a sun valley 6 as prefer that to the monty 6 and both will go on a reg pitch. Having said about monty's once the canopy is on it's over 6ish m therefore again you may have to check out the size of pitch - not sure about that - planty of monty owners on here to ask.

Personally we never had a problem when we had our Vango tunnel (7 metre + in length). We found it seems to be down to the type of sites you use. The more entertainment/swimming pools on sites etc the more of a problem there seems to be. We like sites with nice toilets/showers and maybe a kids play area and like i said have never had a problem.. When you book the site always tell them the size of the tent and at least then you will know if its a problem before arriving.

Also we are members of the C &CC and i have noticed that they now ask automatically what size pitch you require (even if you book online there is a bit for pitch size). there doesnt seem to be extra charges for larger either.

We have a big tent.  Just make sure that you know what size pitch yours takes up. Call beforehand and judge what is best by what they say and what tone of voice they use.  Inevitably, if you call them and they say, "well that doesn't matter" or "we have the perfect pitch", then you will feel at home.   We prefer smaller, quiet sites so it could be different on the morecommercial venues.  Have fun.
