Seasoned camper but pondering over EHU. OH seems to think you can get them quite cheap but after looking on here they all seem to be around £50. Can any of you lovely people tell me what to look out for in a EHU. What is a good one to go for? We are of replacing our ordinary cool box and running one off of EHU - is this possible to do? Also maybe a halogen heater so we can camp later in the year. Sorry for so many questions!
i looked into this as we have just bought ours. we paid £55 i think it was. there was cheaper available but this is a 3 way one with a cut out thingy (can't think of it's proper name atm, sorry!)
i wouldn't buy cheap on something like this due to the safety aspect. the man in the camping shop where i bought mine said that he knows someone who sells them on ebay who basically "makes" them in his garage. eeeeek. scary i think.
I'm often told I am as tight as a ducks bum in water, always looking for the cheap way out, but having took a look on ebay at the cheap "accidents waiting to happen" sold by so called experienced electricians, I took the advice of the UKCS posts and went to Camping Online. The triple gang is on offer at £57 with postage. As its me that has to plug things in, I ain't risking a perm on the few hairs I have left..
Thanks guys, will steer well clear of the cheapies. I have a question though. Can you run a coolbox from an EHU or do you have to use it from 12v in the car. Sorry, not clued up about the leccy stuff. This would probably be the main reason for getting EHU. Also thinking about leccy lighting, and maybe a halogen heater in the winter.
My coolbox is an Igloo Koolmate 40, one of the best around I think - it cools to a lower temp than most others, which is good for meat/fish, though its still a cooler, not a fridge. Anyway, it came with the cigarette lighter type cable for 12v in the car, and I bought an adapter that the cigarette plug goes into and that has a 3-pin plug at the other end - so you still use the 12v one, you dont replace it. The adapter is also okay for other 12v powered items, up to about 6 amps, eg mobile phone chargers.
