Been looking at the self inflating mats and there seems such variety, 3cm, 3.5, 5, 7 etc. in depth. Is it a case of the thicker the better for comfort ?
Trying to decide between a camp bed or the mats at the moment.
Having tried both airbeds and self-inflating sleeping mats, we would recommend neither to be honest! We're currently looking for suitable camping beds as the sleeping bags and mats are both made of slippy-type material so we both end up slipping onto the floor more often than we did on the airbeds!! Although I suppose you could try a fleecy blanket underneath the sleeping bag?
We put a fleece blanket under the sleeping bag - extra warmth and stops you slipping off!
I chose the thickest mat for myself as I figured it must be more comfortable, so can't say how the thinner ones are. We've got the smaller ones for the children and they say they're comfy, they sleep very well, daughter only woke up when she'd managed to wiggle out of her sleeping bag!
The fold away beds possibly would be better as they dip in the middle once built, you can get them in most camping shops and argos, easy to make just slide the metal poles up either side then attach the metal legs, quite comfy also.
My 6 and 4 year olds, both night time fidgets, use Readybeds - basically a sleeping bag with a built in inflatable air mattress, available in Argos etc. The bag itself isn't particularly thick but they arm themselves with a fleecy blanket each and both slept through a thunderstorm down in West Wittering the night before last, warm as toast and no rolling off!
Our too slipped off the double airbed they share a few times this holiday but we were on a bit of a slope! (At dinner time the plates kept sliding off the table!) Generally, they don't slip off but we put a cellular blanket on the airbed underneath their sleeping bags and that's quite grippy.
hope you have just come back from a great holiday. Isle of Wight was lovely and the weather was still gorgeous. Just tried Jordan on a double airbed with a picnic blanket between airbed and sleeping bag this seemed better for 1 night and there was less dampness on the outside of his sleeping bag. Every night in IOW he rolled off or was squashed between the tent wall and bed. Now the double airbed fills the sig bedroom pod and he has less room to fall(just roll around) on the cold ground.
My two boys, aged 6 and 9 have used the campbeds from Argos for the last 3 years. As they dip in the middle they can't roll off and they seem to sleep better than at home!
