Just bought a Vango Aspen 700DLX. Its a great design and amply big enough for a family of 5 including 3 large boys. We also got the footprint.

Thought it was odd that the footprint was much bigger than the tent, but carried on anyway. Tent is a bit tricky putting up especially in a wind, but managed non the less.

First night of rain left us soaking in the tent. Oversized footprint collected water around the outside and then kept it under the tent. Added to leaky seams on the whole groundsheet which brought the puddles underneath into the tent and over all our things.

In discussions with retailer at the moment, but wondered if anyone else has had any problems. Not happy after spending a fair amount on this tent. Not what we were expecting.

Hi ajs633

I also have an Aspen 700 dlx. Have used it for 3 holidays this year and have had NO leaks! Our first trip out(end of May)we had very very strong winds and rain but we were all dry inside our 'cottage'(as we call it). We don't have the footprint, we use a waterprof membrane from B&Q that is slighty smaller than the tent.

Let us know what the retailer says.

Just returned from a fortnight on the Gower with brand new Vango 700DLX, exactly the same problem; footprint groundsheet, leaking seams.  How did you get on ?

We also had a stuck vertical pole. which wouldn't separate, with the help of another campsite we pulled it; eventually it totally separated !

Also several split guy-rope black plastic thingies...

Hi AJS633
What happened to your Vango? Did you take it back?

Hi hardyg
What about you? Did you contact your retailer?

There has been a similar thread a week or so ago and the answer was that the footprint groundsheet was larger than the sig and it was catching the rain and funnelling it down to the lowest point.

The answer was to tuck the edges of the footprint ground sheet under the sig so any rain fell onto the ground rather than the groundsheet.

I had a stuck pole but i found out that we had put it in wrong ie 180 degrees wrong,as the poles are tapered.Wont do that again.

Please note I will take up the guy-rope tensioners and pole break in speparate threads.  This thread is for leaky groundsheets only!

One common theme is that we both had footprint groundsheets; but I cannot see how that have made the SIG (sewn in groundsheet) leak; but the water was dripping off the outer; onto the footprint and then under the SIG.  Would this have caused capillary action to seap the water throughthe SIG seams ?

One other factor; the leaking seams were in front of where we had an electric fan heater; would the action of the hot air on the seam drawn water through....?

Without an additional groundsheet under the SIG the rainwater that is bound to run under the SIG would naturally drain away. But putting another layer of plastic under the SIG you will get water pooling between your SIG and the additional groundsheet.

I'd imagine the action of you walking on your SIG on the pools of water underneath is enough to drive it through the seams of the SIG. You could try seam sealing the seams of the SIG or alternatively put some small holes in the additional groundsheet to encourage the water to drain away.
