Firstly, Hi all. Have been reading lots... looks like a fab site this!!!

We are off tomorrow for our first 'family' camping holiday. I used to live from a rucksack, and have been camping with 'er indoors in a little 3 man jobby. Kids (18+11) have never been.

We picked up a Royal Montpellier 9. Found a friendly local farmer, who let us have a practice pitch in one of his fields as our gardens too small.

Found it quite daunting in a moderate wind. Not too bad putting up inner first, just getting flysheet over. Quite a struggle with just us two though.

But if it's as windy in Oxfordshire tomorrow as it is here today, we are in trouble I fear .

What do you folks do about pitching in winds? Should we chance that there might be willing helpful neighbours? Don't like to impose on people, but really don't want to postpone arrival. Would be so disappointing for us all.

When do you guys admit defeat with regards to wind?

Hi, Windy weather is a real problem, but if there are two of you, you should manage ok. Best tip is to pitch your tent with the back facing into the wind and close the doors. This helps to stop the tent trying to take off!

Thanks David!

When pulling the outer over the top of the inner... Is it easier to start on the windward side, pulling over 'with' the wind (behind you). Or, on the lee side - pulling over 'into' the wind.

When we tried 'with' the wind, we found it pressed the flysheet down onto inner. Making it hard to pull over. Wondering if going 'into' wind would give more lift over, but more flap!
