Hello everyone,

This is my first post although I have been lurking a while and have found loads of useful advice, so first of all - Thank you!

I was wondering if any of you can recommend any small portable barbecues (proper ones, not gas) that can be used as a fire afterwards? We've been looking for one for a while now but can't find anything suitable. Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks!

welcome JetK9,I guess all youre really looking for is a metal tin of some description,i have used old large woks in the past placed on some srategically positioned tent pegs;the grill part is easy if you have saved a few bits from youre old cooker, otherwise still easily attainable.Or i guess any large barbie bowl(hack the legs off ...mm of course depends how big you want you fire

I had one of those krisburs from Tesco's or Asda in their end of season sale, cost less than £1!

Wilkos do some cheap portable style bbq's that may be suitable too

Hi,

Thanks for all your comments and ideas. Dobiesmon.... I'm not being mean I just want a real barbecue! I don't like gas barbecues as IMO you may as well use an ordinary grill, and I'm not sure what Cobb bbq's are...?

http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/outdoor&travel/bbq&garden1/index.html  I wonder if this is the one that lesley meant, I wonder, although it is £20, I think our friends got the same one for a tenner from towsure, but after using it three times, I would not recommend it.  And although we have paid £20 rather than £10 (our friends paid £20 in the end as it did not arrive in time and they had to pay an extr £10 delivery), we threw it away.   All the legs buckled underneath it and it would not stand up.  It was just very rickety and fell to bits very easily.

We bought one yesterday from Atlas Leisure, Fenton, Stokeone Trent  It all folds down (sorry, don't know where in Staffs you are, but unfortunatley we had the last one.)  This is the one though http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Caravanstuff4u_Cooking-Outdoors_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZQ2d1QQfsubZ16QQftidZ2QQtZkm  and at the same price as we paid.  They did have one other design there though, a round one, which did look quite sturdy too.  Although we have not tested this one out yet, it is altoghether much more sturdy than any portable bbq I have ever seen and it folds into itself so the charcoal dust does not get everywhere.

The ones in Asda, we have had before too.  And for the money we paid they served their purpose well, but we threw them away at end of season.  Of course you can afford to at that price.

Hi Lizzz,

Believe it or not I was in there yesterday!! Didn't see any of those though - you must have got there before me!

Would you say that this one could be used as a fire afterwards though?

The only problem I could see, would be the handle melting, but yes.   We usually use a metal tray (you know the disposable bbq type) on a couple of bricks and that works good for us.

Did you see those Mary Quant Logs in there, they keep you warm for ages, apparently.   We did use one on holiday, but unfortunately too much wine to quite remember how warm it kept me.......

Did make use of those parabolic heaters they sell in there though.

Hi jetk9 We use one of those folding barrel one,s. They're a bit bulky but you can store tools, lighter fuel and blocks inside.Once you've cooked you can use bottom half for a small fire and just close it up when you've finnshed, and if you've got a Somerfields they are only £7.49 at the moment for a stainless steel one. hope this helps sekn410.
