Suffered the annoyance of hard ground on our last camping trip and lost 40% of our pegs through bending!

Has anyone any handy hints for overcoming this problem and prolonging the life of tent pegs?

if they were basic pegs that came with the tent this is very normal.

get some better quality pegs, and some Delta ground anchors and you shouldnt suffer this problem again.

welcome to UKCS too.

Even the best pegs can`t go through solid rock! (Well, mountaineering pegs and a drill might....) But rocky ground or, as we encountered last trip out, a layer of hardcore 2" under the grass is still very difficult to peg out into. Even my very strong (and good quality) steel V-pegs and big wire pegs were bending.

So, for the first time in thirty years of camping, I went and bought four rock pegs (of the kind caravaners use to peg their awnings into hardstandings) from the campsite shop. Five minutes later I went back for another sixteen, to cover all the main pegging points of the TT. They were amazing...I`ve never seen anything like them. I could hammer them in like the ground was made of butter, but they didn`t move an inch once in. Quite astonishing. Hubby and I spent a long time in discussing how they worked...I presume the spiral thread makes them sort of screw into the rubble?

They came out reasonably easily too, btw. (Hubby was convinced that they wouldn`t andd we`d have to saw the tops off to get the tent free.)

Highly recommended, despite the 72p each they cost me.

Agreed, we carry a mixture of pegs, delta pegs for the guys and decent metal pegs for the inner, porch etc.

Are the rock pegs suitable for soft/sandy pitches as well?
