Hi,
I can vouch for the vario 900 with the annex on in torrential rainstorms. It withstood the wind and heavy downpours on two trips so far this year, but took the annex off last week and it leaked like a sieve through the side doors. We're hoping seam sealant has done the trick, or else we're going to return the tent. The space is fantastic and apart from the leaks the vario 900 is great. Having said that, with a kayak you'll be fine without the annex lol. Seriously though, the velcro and elastic does hold in place, its just that there is a problem with the side doors, which is a pain as we chose it because it was so versatile.
